On Monday August 10, 2020, a storm of unprecedented strength traveled through Benton County, bringing with it 90+ mph winds and a tremendous amount of rain. Central Lutheran School in Newhall, IA sustained a massive amount of damage to the exterior and interior of the building, including the loss of the roof to the original gymnasium.
We are working with several entities to put a plan together for repairs. In addition to the extensive exterior damage there is a tremendous amount of water and storm damage inside the building; the small gym, the kitchen, the computer lab, the classrooms, and specifically the 2nd Grade classroom which was damaged by the falling roof. Part of these conversations include what will be included by insurance, and what will not.
Our need is great, as we are a week away from beginning a school year like never before due to COVID-19, this natural disaster adds another burden on our teachers and staff, board members and families, all of whom are dealing with the destruction of their own personal homes and farms.
Our chosen theme for this school year is FORWARD IN FAITH, and our chosen bible verse is Philippians 3:13b-14:
Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
This theme and bible passage was selected long before the derecho (the formal name of the weather event on Monday), and yet it provides great comfort in our ever-changing world. As we start the rebuilding process, and with the strength and courage of our Lord, please pray for us. And, as you are able, please consider a tax-free donation to the school to be used for books, classroom materials, and equipment damaged in the storm. Donations can be given using this Go Fund Me page (credit cards and PayPal accepted), or via check or cash mailed to the school (310 3rd Street West, Newhall, IA 52315). Please add FORWARD IN FAITH to the memo line of your check.
God is always good, and we pray to our Good Shepard for strength and perseverance for all affected by this sorrowful event. We pray for the children, teachers and staff in their preparations for this new challenge in which they face this school year. We thank you for protecting those who were in the school at the time of the storm, and for protecting all of our CLS families, friends of CLS and those in our community. We ask for continued strength and protection in the days that follow, and as we care for our neighbors in clean up and rebuilding efforts. We are blessed to be children of God, no matter what the circumstances of our earthly lives. We are excited to begin the school year so we can continue to carry out our most important mission:
Central Lutheran School assists our families and congregations by preparing our children to be disciples in this life, and for the life to come.” This is what we truly believe and teach.
God's Blessings now and always,
Central Lutheran School
