Fort Lee PBA Local #245 in partnership with Chief Keith M. Bendul and the Fort Lee Police Department is participating in No-Shave November. This year all donations will be donated to the Hackensack University Medical Center for Cancer Research in the name of Police Officer David Kurz who has recently fallen to this terrible disease.
Fort Lee PBA Local #245 aims to bring awareness to all types of cancer, which include both prostate and testicular cancer. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in American men. In 2017, 161,360 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, 26,739 will die from prostate cancer. Currently, 2.9 million men live with prostate cancer in the United States. 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in America for men between the ages of 20-34. In 2017, 8,850 men will be diagnosed with testicular cancer, 410 men will die from testicular cancer this year.
Early detection of prostate and testicular cancer is critical to survival rates. The five-year survival rate for prostate cancer, when caught in the early stages, is 100%. The five-year survival rate of testicular cancer, when caught in the early stages, is 99%. Both prostate and testicular cancer not caught in the early stages has limited treatment options, early diagnoses is critical to the survive of these cancers. Prostate cancer can be detected early by getting a simple PSA blood test. Testicular cancer can be detected early by getting educated on self-screening exams.
