Fortino's fight against leukemia

Hello, my name is Maria Soledad Fabela, I am creating this account for my brother Fortino Fabela.

He’s the sincerest, kind hearted, honest, dependable, and loving person you will ever meet. He’s an amazing son, brother, uncle, cousin and nephew. He’s a true role model to my boys, he has his priorities straight, he doesn’t drink or smoke, and never his life consumed any type of drug. He fills the room with a positive vibe, he’s filled with so much love and joy for everyone that takes the time to know him personally. We are really blessed to have him in our lives, yet sometimes I fall short in expressing it to him.

The month of June became a downhill spiral for him, during the first week he started experiencing cold-like symptoms and easily treated it with over the counter medicine. As the third week of June approached he started experiencing chills, fever, fatigue, weight loss and most notably it became painful when eating or drinking liquids. He went to the clinic to get tested and was told it was strep throat. He was then given antibiotics for ten days, but it didn’t seem to be helping.

Close to finishing the antibiotics he noticed a flash of light in his left eye and didn’t not think much of it. Until the following morning he noticed a blood spot in the left. He went to the optometrist, where he was told that he needed to get an in-depth physical done ASAP, soon after he went to get a physical done. Apparently, his results were received at the clinic, but he never received a call from them. Instead he was called from a Cancer and Blood Disorder Clinic which frighten him. The next available appointment with them was until July 24th.

I was not pleased how things were handled at this clinic and asked my brother to go back to his PCP Dr. R. Reddy and get his opinion in all of this. An appointment for Monday July 10th was set to be seen, blood work was done Tuesday July 11th. Wednesday July 12th, he received a call from his PCP. Dr. Reddy personally called him at 8pm to let him know that his results were in and that he needed to be seen the following day, Thursday July 13th, first thing in the morning. Thursday morning at 9:20 am my heart sank, a panic attack and tears were ready to overcome me, but I held back and I could only imagine what was going on in my only brother’s head. I had to be stronger than ever to help him defeat this! Our faith is strong and I believe in God that he will once again regain his health.

That same Thursday he had an appointment set with the specialist Dr. Oommen and that same afternoon he was admitted to the hospital. A bone marrow biopsy was done July 14th, during that weekend he was given two blood transfusions and platelets transfusion. On July 19th, he was officially diagnosed with AML Leukemia and immediately started his first round of Chemotherapy. Dr. Oommen immediately stated that he would not be able to work for a year after the whole procedure was finish. My brother automatically became dependent to my parents once again financially. On August 3rd, he had a second bone marrow biopsy done and on Saturday August 5th we received a little bit of hope when they said that from the 10% of body cells remaining in his body only 20% was leukemia and with another round of chemo would be sufficient. Our hearts felt happy and we were finally seeing the light at the end of tunnel. During this time, he was given more blood and platelet transfusion to bring up his levels a bit.

However, that happiness soon came to end yesterday, Wednesday August 9th, when Dr. Oommen brought in the second half of the biopsy results. My was brother was diagnosed with FLT3-AML Leukemia, a chromosome in his body had mutated which started everything. Chemo alone will not be able to keep him in remission for more than a month and will be needing a Bone Marrow Transplant in order become completely healthy once again. His cancer team’s goal is to get him into remission to get the Bone Marrow Transplant procedure done.

I’m typing these words to ask family members, friends and everyone that can find it in your hearts to please help my brother fight FLT3-AML Leukemia. All donations will be used for all his insurance monthly premium payments, medical expenses that might not covered, his personal bills and other expenses that might come along the way with the Bone Marrow Transplant. Any monetary donations will be appreciated, but we are foremost thankful for all the prayers that are being done for him during this time.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to read my brother’s story. God Bless you all!
