Relief: For the Kids & Youth

Donation protected
Hurricane Harvey hit the great state of Texas as a Category 4 hurricane with winds over 130 mph to the southeast areas. Houston is the where the media is focused, but I don’t want to forget about the surrounding areas: Galveston, Texas City, Dickinson, League City, Friendswood, Victoria, and Rockport just to name a few.

Many of you know me because this campaign was sent predominantly family and friends but for those that don't, my name is Dacia James-Lewis, choreographer and creative director in the entertainment industry (www.dacialewis.com). I was born and raised in Galveston, Texas and God has impressed upon me and my family to do what we can to assist in the healing and restoration process. My heart goes out to everyone, especially the kids affected. As I sit in my house on the east coast, I’m watching people I know riding to safety on boats. My heart aches and I feel so helpless, because I literally saw kids that I teach during summer dance workshops in Galveston trying to survive through the worse levels of water our country has ever seen.

My husband and I both have a heart for the youth. We always have and we always will.  Instead of these kids pulling out their favorite outfit for the first day of school or finding the best accessories to match their uniforms, their lives would be uprooted. These kids had no idea that instead of prepping for school on Monday they would be dealing with an uncontrollable storm. Therefore, we felt it imperative to start a campaign so that we can donate to kids that we know need necessities now as well as back-to-school clothes and school supplies. We will withdraw the funds donated and set up a pop up shop in Galveston County where people will be able to come and pick up necessities for their kids the week of September 10, 2017.

Also, some of the funds we raise will be sent to Pastor John Gray and, his wife, Aventar's non-profit organization called "Become the Bridge" that will also help house families in need as we trust their integrity and know the funds will be allocated accordingly.

This GoFundMe is a way for us to reach out to our families, friends, peers, and especially my industry colleagues to urge them to lend a helping hand. I know there are several crooked non-profit organizations that are taking advantage of platforms and taking money to use improperly. Please be reassured; EVERY dollar and donation we receive will be accounted for and given to local charities, organizations, and families in need, because as I stated before I grew up here and so did my husband. This is our community. We know these kids. We know their families. They will get the help that you provide.

The facts are clear:

3.1 Million children are currently under flash flood emergency
1.5 Million children live in the counties where the disaster has been officially declared disastrous

So if you want to help our cities, our community, and our families, and our homes, then join your hearts with ours. Let us not sit back and do nothing. But, let's show our youth, the next generation, that we have their backs by investing into them and making sure they have what they need AND are prepared for their school year. The next mayor, congressman, or better yet president of the United States could very well be a kid that we sow into today. Let's do this!!!
