Tragedy struck the Formisano-Solaro family this week leaving two beautiful, innocent children to grieve their mother, Christie Solaro's, death and their father, John Formisano, who has been charged with her passing.

Rachel and Ryan are wonderful children who are blessed to have a strong network of family and friends to help care for them. Everyone is doing all they can do for the children' transition to this new life considering the circumstances.
Last night we were able to get access to the house and stuffed as many bags & boxes with the children's clothing, toys, medication and sippy cups/plates (things that would give them comfort and normalcy) we could. They are with family and are surrounded by the most important thing they can have, love.
These children have a rough road ahead. We are raising money to help offset the costs of relocating the children, setting up their new living situation, and providing a financial foundation for their future needs.

As a background, I was John's partner on the Newark Police Department. I retired ten years ago and currently reside in Nutley, NJ.
John is the brother I never had, and by extension, Christie, was a sister-in-law to me. In that same vein, Rachel and Ryan are my niece and nephew. Johnny and I made a promise to each other more than 20 years ago that should anything happen to us, the other would take care of the family. I am fulfilling that oath.
The monies raised are solely for the use and benefit of the Formisano children. They have been taken in by Christie's brother, Steve, and will be with him and his wife. They had just bought a new home for their family of four. From one day to the next, two more children and a dog have come into the mix. The monies raised will go towards any expense incurred from this situation, relocation costs, clothing, furniture, toys, medical care, day care, extracurricular activities, etc. The plan is to administer the money with three goals, the immediate expenses, first year expenses and then establishing a long term plan by way of a trust.
In the short term, I have opened an account at my bank, USAA, and ordered an ATM card for Steve as he will be the only person with access to the account. This account is solely for the monies collected and for Steve to use for the children. He will receive copies of all bank statements, and when the GoFundMe campaign ends and I close the account, he will have all the reports for his record keeping. Once the dust settles, the plan is for Steve to open Custodial Accounts and transfer the monies there for the 1st year expenses. I would expect this phase to be completed within the next two weeks. I have spoken to financial advisors and the recommendation would be to put any overages into a Trust for the children for the long term. Steve will set that up as soon as he can with an attorney.
