Dear Family and Friends, "¨
As most of you know our son, Max, has Autism. Max is 4 years old and is nonverbal, or "preverbal" as we call him.
On average, Autism costs a family up to $60,000/year. I believe this to be a very accurate number and know of several families who even exceed that expense because of the lack of quality, covered medical care for their children. "¨
We have been working hard during the past several years to help Max improve, and while we have made progress, there is still much work to be done. "¨
Specifically, we are saving/raising money for treatments and therapies for Max that are not covered by insurance.
Max deals with feeding difficulties and severe verbal apraxia. We are fortunate to have found a wonderful therapist who works with Max once a week, and while he is making progress, it is slow and more therapy is needed. We are adding a second session each week, which is not covered by insurance.
We are also looking at attending a one-week training session out East for the Son Rise Program. Based on our research, we believe that the Son Rise approach may be well suited for Max's personality. Son Rise is a unique approach based upon the idea that "the children show us the way in, and then we show them the way out." It has helped many children learn to speak and develop real, meaningful relationships with others. To learn more, click here. "¨
In addition, funds raised will help pay for doctor's visits and other medical needs. For instance, Max suffers from gastrointestinal issues and sleeping issues. We are fortunate to have some amazing doctors who have helped us make progress, but again, we have a long way to go and many of these doctors are not covered by insurance.
