On Thursday, October 26, 2017, our dear daughter, sister, cousin, niece and friend was called to heaven, after a long and valiant battle with lymphoma.  Maricel's cancer journey was extensive, starting at age 17, yet those who knew her know that Maricel cared so much more about others than she did about her own suffering and fear. Maricel bravely endured five rounds of intense chemotherapy treatments after her cancer metastasized in 2013, taking breaks only to regain her strength enough to survive the next treatment.  None of the treatments could defeat the relentless attack.  She spent months in the hospital, and over a month in ICU, when we almost lost her in 2014. But Maricel rallied hard and fought to come back.  Through her suffering and pain, she never turned away from joy.  No matter how dim things looked she kept her faith and her loved ones close.

At the darkest point in her illness this September, when treatment options were running out, the pain had become unbearable, and Hurricane Maria forced an evacuation from Miami and away from her medical team, a beacon of light appeared!  Maricel was accepted into a remarkable experimental treatment with impressive results for lymphoma patients like our Chely.  Maricel called CAR-T her "milagro," her miracle,  and we put all our hopes for survival into this program.  Maricel was slated to begin treatment in New York City in November.  She returned to Miami, and in mid-September began what we hoped would be her last round of chemo ever.  Maricel was suffering, depleted, weak and very sick, but her heart and her spirit were high. This chemo was intended to alleviate some of the tremendous pain, by reducing the tumors, and prepare her for the targeted treatment to come in NYC.  Her cancer was so aggressive at this point, that the tumors were doubling and tripling in size within only a few months, and now numbering close to 100. In spite of it all, she was resolute and hopeful.  She would tolerate this treatment so that she could make it to her milagro in NY.

Unfortunately, Maricel's fragile and deteriorated body was not as strong as her spirit or her heart, and her systems could not tolerate the brutal assault of the medications.  It is a tragic and devastating end to a story that was supposed to have a much different ending.  She was only a couple weeks from the immunotherapy that might have saved her, and might have spared us all the misery of having to say goodbye to such an incredible force of love and strength in our lives.

Maricel's wish is to be buried with her grandmother, in her beloved Puerto Rico.  Her parents, ravaged emotionally, physically and financially, are working hard to honor her request, but they need our help.  Maricel's mother moved in with her daughter after the cancer returned, and never left her side.  She has not worked since.  To the very end, Jenny slept in a cot in the ICU right next to her precious daughter.  And when sweet Maricel took her last breath, her adoring mother was right there by her side.  Now Jenny and Raymond must travel to and from Puerto Rico, transport Maricel, and prepare a service worthy of our Chelita in a territory decimated by the hurricane last month.

Upon their return, they must clear out Maricel's apartment in Miami, and close out her life there for the last 13 years.  Then they must return to Virginia, without their beloved daughter, and face the mounting debt, resulting directly and indirectly, from a catastrophic illness spanning over 4 years.  This little family is gutted in every possible way, and your generous giving, in tribute to Maricel, will ease their burden moving forward from this terrible tragedy. I beseech you all to open your hearts for Maricel, and take care of those she loved the most in her name.  Thank you for loving our precious Maricel.  May her love continue to be a blessing to you for all the days of your life.  Please keep Maricel, her devoted parents, and her adoring family and friends in your prayers.
