Supporting my friend Samuel

Donation protected
I am raising funds in support of my friend Samuel who will need a new wheelchair.  Samuel's wheelchair is a big investment, costing approximately £3,500.

To help achieve this target I will be attempting the Ironman Wales event on the 13th September 2015; we will be incredibly grateful for any support you can offer.

An Ironman is a triathlon made up of a 2.4 mile swim followed by a 112 mile cycle finishing with a 26.2 mile run (a marathon).  I am hoping to complete it under the time limit of 17 hours!!

Please take a few moments to read about Samuel.

Samuel is a bright and happy 6 year old, with a great sense of humour and a love for people. He lives in Angmering, West Sussex with his parents, younger sister Anabelle and Alfie the dog.

Samuel was born in June 2008 at Worthing Hospital. He was 7 weeks early and spent the first 2 weeks of his life in the Special Care Baby Unit. At some point in late pregnancy, Samuel suffered brain damage and was later diagnosed with Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy. He also has a Seizure Disorder and Cerebral Visual Impairment.

For Samuel, this means that he is unable to sit-up, crawl or walk independently and he struggles with the use of his hands. Mouth closure and producing the words that he wants to say is also a challenge and causes him to dribble.

Samuel loves attending Ingfield Manor School and, with the help of his parents, family and carers, lives life to the full. He enjoys trampolining, horse riding, swimming and meeting with friends and family.

Assistance from the NHS and Social Services has already helped make major changes to his home, including a lift, flush floor shower and ramped access. Equipment and seating have also been provided to help Samuel with the everyday activities of daily life. However, there are still many needs that have to be organised and paid for privately.

As Samuel is growing up his needs are becoming more complex. He and his family now have to consider that he will always use a wheelchair, require hoisting and need help with caring for himself. Samuel will require more adaptations to his home and additional, specialist wheelchairs and equipment. He will continue to get some help with funding, but his family need to raise additional money to pay for these themselves.

Any money raised will be used to pay the top-up funding for his wheelchairs; for specialist seating and equipment; adaptations to his home and any treatment and therapy that is not funded by the NHS or Social Services.

Samuel is an absolute inspiration and a delight to be with, and deserves every opportunity to maximise his independence and enjoyment of life. The money raised is vital to meeting Samuel’s equipment and therapy needs and we will be forever grateful for your help.
