For the Love of Deyzha

Deyzha Kaelani Mondares was diagnosed with brain cancer at the age 12.   This once outgoing little girl who loved to draw, do arts and crafts, dance, cheerlead, and even perform at the Golden State Warriors games can no longer enjoy these simple things in life.   Her hopes of becoming a chef and owning a bakery with her cousin Aaliyah has now been stripped away from her at the age of 17.

It all started one day when she fainted while shopping.  She was rushed to the hospital where an MRI was performed.  The results indicated that Deyzha had a tumor deep in the middle of her brain.   Prior to this, she had no signs of any health issues.  This was devastating news to our family.   Emergency surgery was conducted immediately to remove the tumor and to get a biopsy done.   Once the results came back from the biopsy, the family was informed that the tumor was in fact Germinoma – a form of cancer and treatment was needed.  Deyzha had to undergo three rounds of chemotherapy and thirty days of radiation.  It was definitely a life changing experience for Deyzha and our family.  But with intense therapy, Deyzha was able to return to an almost normal state.

It was only about a year ago, Deyzha’s health started to decline.  First, she had trouble opening her left hand.  She then lost strength in her left arm which caused her hand to stay in a bent 90-degree angle.  She could no longer use her left hand at this point.  Eventually, her left leg started to give out on her as well.  It began with her limping on her left side to her left leg falling behind when she tried to walk.  She was given a cane and was told that it would be her best friend.  It only helped for a short period of time as the left side of her body started to really fail on her to the point where she is not able to hold herself up anymore.   She is now wheelchair bound and has lost complete mobility to the left side of her body.  Medical professionals suggested therapy two times a week - although it did not help.  In the midst of everything, Deyzha also started to show signs of dementia and could no longer care for herself physically.

Fast forward to the present, we received the most dreaded news that another mass was found in the front lobe of her brain.  We were told by the doctor that they have always noticed something in her MRI’s the past five years but did not do any further testing and pretty much chalked it up as scar tissue.  Once again, Deyzha was rushed into emergency surgery on August 29, 2018.  The mass was successfully removed and she is now recovering from the surgery.  We are patiently waiting for the results to see if active cancer has actually come back, or if it’s radiation necrosis, or if it’s something else.   Whatever this mass is, it has killed her brain cells and has caused her brain to shrink significantly.  Once the results are received from the biopsy, they will know how to treat her moving forward.

Although we were told that she would never gain her mobility back and what has been taken from her cannot be reversed due to the dead brain cells, Deyzha has already showed some signs of improvement and was able move her left arm for the first time in a very long time.  That alone has given us hope and we are praying for a miracle.   Through it all, Deyzha has been a true fighter.  She has showed us exactly how strong she is by keeping a smile on her face and her head up high.  She remains positive and strong willed.

However, this journey to recovery is far from over for Deyzha and our family.   At this time, we would like to ask for your help.  The goal is to help purchase a medical bed and an electric scooter for Deyzha so she can be as comfortable as possible in her current state.  We also want her to feel and be independent as much as possible since she still has use to the right side of her body.

Any contributions will be greatly and deeply appreciated.  We also want to take the time to thank all of our family and friends for the outpouring prayers, love, and support Deyzha has received during this time.
