My uncle Steve has been a Special Olympics athlete for over 30 years. Through the program he has found more than sports. He has discovered leadership opportunities, education, friendships, and a sense of confidence that would not have been possible otherwise. Watching him grow into the person he is today has been one of the greatest honors of my life.
I have volunteered with Special Olympics for nearly my entire life. I have seen firsthand how training, competitions, and health programs help athletes stay strong and healthy, and how inclusive teams teach their communities to welcome people of all abilities. Steve’s joy after a race, his pride when he helps a teammate, and his confidence in everyday life are constant reminders of how powerful this work is.
