After 27 years in the HVAC-R industry Craig is no longer able to continue in this field. In 1996 Craig was diagnosed with Ushers Syndrome type 2 which meant he not only has a hearing loss but is also blind now. He continued working as long as he could but could no longer continue in this line of work. He has never complained or said, 'why me', but just keeps moving forward.
Craig enrolled in college to retrain himself and then went to join the NFB (National Federation of the Blind) and became an active member of the ACB (American Council of the Blind). After applying and being accepted to Leader Dogs he was introduced to his best friend Bear. Now with his new set of eyes and the advances in hearing aids, he once again is independent. Craig has always been self sufficient and although being blind and deaf this has not stopped him from continuing to do the things he loves to do....He can fix most anything and does all the work around his house. He can walk anyone through a project if they need help with explicit detail. He has all the tools and equipment to handle most any project.....at least he did.
What happened recently is why this go fund me page is started. In order to make ends meet, even though Craig has an extensive and impressive resume, the challenge for a deaf and blind person is overwhelming to find work. SSDI provides very little, he decided to advertise on Craigslist for 2 roommates to share his home and cover some of the other living expenses. This became a living nightmare. They broke into his private living quarters and stole irreplaceable collectables, a large jar of quarters, baseball cards and other sports memorabilia. Craig is an avid craftsman and woodworking hobbyist and can repair most anything with the tools he had. These people robbed him, hid things from him, tried to scare him by standing behind or pushing and shoving him when he didn't know anyone was in the room. They robbed him of all of his hand tools, specialty tools, power tools, refrigeration equipment, weed eater, leaf blower, hedge trimmer, table saw, band saw, food and the feeling of safety and security in his home. An order of protection was issued and they were evicted by the police. Craig has always been independent and able to do his own repairs and takes a great deal of pride in his home. This is devastating for him....his last text to me was...I'm screwed, I can't do anything.
