Our big brother Ben was diagnosed with motor neuron disease (sometimes called mnd) nearly two years ago. This disease is vile and completely destroys the persons ability to walk, talk, move and eventually breath. He is now in a wheelchair and can't walk or talk. He also struggles to eat and a feeding tube has been inserted to help with hydration and nutrition. Since being diagnosed Ben and his family's life has been turned upside down and with huge financial strain after having to stop working in September.
The NHS have been amazing, however even their resources have limits and unfortunately do not cover everything he needs to ensure he stays as fit and healthy as he possibly can. He is having to self fund items such as bibs and foot warmers to massages and physio sessions, along with an extensive list of vitamins and supplements the monthly cost of all this is about £250 per month.
Unfortunately with mnd the body changes rapidly and so do the needs. Ben has gone from walking and talking, leading a fully independent life to being almost entirely paralysed in less than 18 months. He spends all day in a wheelchair and all night attached to a ventilator in bed. He is hoisted around the house and now has 24/7 care. To make matters even worse he has lost the ability to speak so now uses a synthesised version of his voice which he types the words with his eyes.
Up until now Ben has been too proud to ask however he is aware of this fundraiser. So how can you help? Well, by donating to his support fund you are lessening the burden on his family's finances and helping to alleviate some stress from their lives. So we are reaching out to everyone. There are a few major items on the list for this year including a specialised bike which will enable him to reduce stiffness and a complete bathroom renovation to ensure he can shower safely.
