For Matthew's Family

This pool is to express support to the Oguche family as they confront the tragic loss of their son, Matthew Danjuma Oguche on the 20/04/2019 Kajuru attack (Kaduna State, Nigeria).

Faye’s family and friends all over the world are heartbroken by Matthew’s passing. We send our thoughts and condolences to the Oguches in Nigeria, along whom we mourn the unbearable loss of the two young souls. Both were committed to pursuing their ambitions and living purposeful lives. They were tremendous achievers, inspiring and supporting many around them.

“Impressive,” “unexpected,” and “smart” were Faye’s first words to describe Matthew. He brightly obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from Landmark University and a postgraduate diploma in Public Administration and Policy from the University of Maiduguri. He worked as an Agricultural Science teacher in remote communities in North-East Nigeria, voluntarily giving agrobusiness courses to help students build a sustainable future. Matthew also set up a club called ‘Girls in the Garden’ to support girls in starting vegetable plots and encourage female entrepreneurship, after which he established a social enterprise called ‘Sesame Africa’. He was a volunteer with Family Life and HIV Education in 2015 and Aid for Rural Education Access Initiative in 2016. Bright and eloquent, he was also a Nigerian delegate to the Youth Ag-Summit in Belgium in 2017. Since, he contributed his intelligence and altruism to humanitarian projects with the Emergency Coordination Centre, Mercy Corps – where him and Faye first met, and INSO, since January 2019. His colleagues described him as “a kind, intelligent and outward looking young man with a passion for learning and a deep commitment to helping others.”

Learning more about Matthew has moved many of us and made it clear him and Faye had ‘found each other’.

On November 17th 2018, Faye and Mathew danced together for the first time and became inseparable. “I’m so surprised and really happy; it was right under my nose all this time!”

She spoke with admiration and pride of his modesty, tenderness and ambitions. “He’s smart, he’s got interests and he pursues these interests independently.”

She was both intrigued and charmed by “the whole, deep, complex person under his quietness”.

“You know what’s really nice about him as well is that, you know sometimes when you meet someone and it gives you like a weird nod in your stomach or something? I just don’t get any of this with him, it’s just like… It’s everything that people say these things should be. Ah well that’s five whole minutes of me talking about him.”

“This is definitely the best relationship I could have even had. The healthiest, and sweetest and most loving where I really, really know he loves me. It is something real between us and that’s undeniable. It’s good and I’m happy.”

Thank you to Matthew’s mother, father, five brothers, and sister for making him the exceptional young man he was for his country, friends, colleagues, and Faye. Thank you Matthew for making your family and us so proud; for entering Faye’s life, making her feel so adored and protected.

Our thoughts and wishes forever go to the Oguches, as they go through their heartache and try to rebuild themselves after this tragedy.

May Matthew’s soul rest in peace, endlessly inspiring us.

Mooneys and friends.
