Our dear lifelong Family Friend, Jenka Lockwood of West Huntington, WV was hit broadside in a tragic car crash on August 1, 2018 on Big Branch Road outside Chesapeake OH.
She is so lucky to be alive! Her neck and arm were broken, her spinal cord and arteries were irreparably damaged, she requires a trach tube and respirator to breathe, and is mostly paralyzed with some movement in her arms. Communication for now has been limited to her spelling out words, but she is admittedly glad to be alive and have her ever sharp mind. And sharp and humorous it is!
Jenka retired last year from her tenure as a college professor but stayed active in education and training. Anyone who knows Jenka, or has even heard of her, know her to be one-of-a-kind special. She volunteers much of her time with her church, those in need, and local humanitarian causes. She is the go to for all things science and math. She is the voice of reason in difficult situations and a moral compass to all who know her. She is kind to creatures great and small and a diehard animal lover. Fierce independence and noble strength have always been her calling card. As her friend of 55 years, I have always called her top rung of the ladder. She is a real balcony person.
Her long term prognosis is yet to be determined but she is expected to be transferred to a spine rehabilitation center outside of Atlanta within a week. Needed immediately is the down payment of half the cost of a helicopter transport to Atlanta. She will quickly need a motorized chair, wheelchair ramps installed, a van with chair lift, a hospital bed, bathroom aids, only to name a few of the necessities. Her household bills will be mounting monthly.
