<div>This is the official Fundraiser for Manuel (Manny) “Tortuguita” Terán (they used they/them pronouns), managed by and for their family. Manny was shot and killed by a Georgia State Patrol Officer on the morning of January 18th, while defending the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_River_Forest" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">South River or Weelaunee Forest</a> in Atlanta, GA, from destruction due to a planned and widely opposed police and fire department training facility known as "<a href="https://bittersoutherner.com/feature/2022/the-forest-for-the-trees-atlanta-prison-farm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cop City</a>."

</div>
<div>Funds will go towards funeral expenses as well as to support the family with travel, food, and in general during this time of immense grief. Manny’s Mother, Belkis, is currently in Panama and has to apply for an Emergency Visa to come to the United States so she can be with her child and family, and needs financial support to achieve this as well.

</div>
<div>Manny is also survived by an older brother, Daniel, who will be managing the funds, as well as three other siblings and their father Joel.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>There is no body camera footage of the murder, and therefore it will be more difficult to establish what really happened on Jan. 18. But what we do know Is that Manny is no longer with us in the material realm; that the life of a human being was violently taken.

<div><a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/jan/21/protester-killed-georgia-cop-city-police-shooting" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Belkis told a reporter</a>, “I’m going to clear Manuel’s name. They killed [them] … like they tear down trees in the forest – a forest Manuel loved with passion.”

<div>Tortuguita was Indigenous Venezuelan of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timoto%25252525E2%2525252580%2525252593Cuica_people" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tomoto-Cuica</a> descent, queer, non-binary, and always the biggest light in any room they entered. They were an eco-anarchist, Forest Defender, and community member.

<div><a href="https://atlantapresscollective.com/2023/01/19/justice-for-tort/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Atlanta Press Collective</a> said: “They spent their time between Atlanta, defending the forest from destruction and coordinating mutual aid for the movement, and Florida where they helped build housing in low income communities hit hardest by the most recent hurricane. They were a trained medic, a loving partner, a dear friend, a brave soul, and so much more. In Tort’s name, we continue to fight to protect the forest and stop “Cop City” with love, rage, and a commitment to each other’s safety and well-being.”

<div><br />
</div>
<div>Many people have reached out with memories and accounts of Tortuguita. They are remembered and cherished by many friends, loved ones, and people who they supported with mutual aid.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>“They loved all life and people -especially their qtpoc community — deeply.“
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>“Tortuguita was a very kind person. They were always willing to help and take care of people in need around them, especially the QTIPOC (Queer, Trans, Black, Intersex, People of color) community. They were always attentive to others needs and always offered the best of them. A true warrior for the forest and the people! I miss them so much.”

</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
