Chasity Grissom, a 33 year old Black, Queer Womxn living in Durham NC. You probably know her as your favorite mixologist, bar manager, and/or service industry specialist at Beyu Caffe, Cocoa Cinnamon, Bull McCabe’s, Goorsha, and Jeddah’s Tea.
In June 2018, Chass was diagnosed with late stage three cervical cancer. It was recommended she begin rigorous radiation and chemotherapy once per week for several weeks. While undergoing treatment in August 2018, the cancer had spread to Chass' lymph nodes forcing her to take a short leave. She was unable to perform her duties at Cocoa Cinnamon.
The Cancer Has Returned
Chass has been in remission since January 2019. She was given the opportunity to get chemo and radiation treatment through a research study hosted by both UNC and Duke Oncology clinics. In January 2020, Chass began to experience the same severe pain, swelling, and muscle weakness in her back, legs, hips. She is having trouble digesting certain foods and needs to abide by a strict diet. It is difficult for her to walk, to stand for short periods of time, and to take care of her domestic needs without assistance, however she is managing relief with yoga therapy, spending time outside in the sun, and taking short walks. She was reassessed and found to be living with stage four cervical cancer.
Recently, she went home to visit her family in Louisiana and saw a specialist who asked her why she had not opted to have a hysterectomy. She stated that she was never given that option, only to do this research study because she was working in the service industry with no insurance. This seemed highly problematic to the specialist and Chass’ family -- due to this, the pandemic we’re all experiencing wherein health disparities among the Black population are glaring, and the fact that Chass is unable to return to work, she will be moving back home to Louisiana this month.
She is in need of financial and moral support immediately. I, Angel Dozier, have decided to re-launch the GoFundMe and change the final goal to raise $100,000 so that Chass can get the adequate care she needs. If she doesn’t get the right type of care, her life expectancy is less than two years. At this point, we believe a hysterectomy is the best option and will save her life.
A Word from Chass
I have found a facility on the other side of the border that has accepted me as a patient, they work to build up the body's health, and also use alternative holistic methods that are designed to rid the body of cancer. The facility is called the Immunity Therapy Center in Tijuana, Baja California.
This is my last hope to get my health back to a point where I can heal. I am confident about this place and very hopeful. I will have to live there for at least a month to receive treatment. The cost of the hospital stay doesn't include room and board, nor any additional medical services I may need not included in the basic package. I will be moving home and selling everything I have. Any contribution you make will help. I need to go as soon as possible.
Funds will be used to continue paying medical and household bills. Throughout this process, Chass will be documenting the details of this health disparity as a contribution to the Movement for Black Lives and Black Health.
Other ways you can help:
Chass will be selling as much of her belongings as possible so they don’t have to be moved to Louisiana.
This includes potentially selling her car, a 2000 Gold Honda Accord.
We will need a moving and packing crew for items that will remain in August 2020.
