For April & Her Boys

April (Heien) Moore is my best friend. We live almost five hours away from one another and, like so many best friends in their early thirties, see each other less than we should, talk on the phone only intermittently between day-to-day adulting responsibilities and postulate the opportunities of international travel via a girls trip we’ve been planning for years but have yet to make materialize.
When she moved back to her childhood home of Stuttgart several years back, it was to make a new start with her husband and newborn son, Kane, born on Christmas day. Although Nashville was ripe with opportunities, Stuttgart was home to family and the support their new family needed. For the past several years, April and her husband Don have made the self-proclaimed ‘Duck Hunting & Rice Capital Of The World’ small town home.
April & Don added two sons to their family and she has spent the better part of the last 6 years raising children while providing for her family with her at-home design business, Farm Town Designs as Don’s two back surgeries in the past couple years have made his employment options limited.
On Saturday, December 9th, her life was forever changed when she found her husband unconscious on the bathroom floor; his heart had stopped. He was admitted to Little Rock Hospital last night but has been declared brain dead - the doctors have said there is no hope in bringing him back. She and her mother are at the hospital now; her three boys are with her father. Her oldest son, Kane, turns six two weeks from tomorrow.
Just last week, April had spoken about pursuing a graduate degree in International Affairs/Global Studies… she wanted to focus in humanitarian efforts and put all of her amazing talents towards causes greater than her. I was so ecstatic to see this light in her that has always been present but had been stifled from life’s circumstances. April has perpetually been one of the brightest, most determined and creative people I know and to see her taking those first steps to follow her dreams for herself and her family was inspiring.
Now she is struggling with one of the toughest decisions of her life whilst also determining how she will tell her three young sons that their father will no longer be a part of their lives. Per Don's request, his organs will be donated and he will be taken off his ventilator in the next 36 hours. She now shoulders the responsibilities of two parental roles, breadwinner, and sole caretaker. Don unfortunately had no life insurance and savings was simply not an option on their current income.
Many of you know April and many of you may not. Although I’ve only seen my best friend in person a handful of times in the past several years, she and her family mean everything to me and I would not be the person I am today without her in my life and the times she has been there for me, no matter how trivial they have been in comparison. The hand she has been dealt is not an easy one and the road she now faces ahead is steep. We are alike in so many ways, one of which being we are absolutely the worst at asking anyone for help.
If you are able to do anything to help lighten her load this holiday season and for all of the seasons she has to come, please give. Give in the name of her husband. Give in the name of her children. Give in the name of the better life she has been attempting to make for her and her family already. But most of all, give in the name of friendship. Because this - this right here - is what best friends are for.
Any funds raised or gifts given will go directly to April Heien-Moore to help with medical bills & memorial costs for Don, day-to-day life & savings for her and her sons, and hopefully means to help her continue to pursue her dreams of making a better life for her and her sons.
