Food For Life Nepal: Mid Day Meals

Nepal is highly vulnerable to a number of disasters for example: earthquakes, floods, landslides, fires, epidemics, avalanches, windstorms, hailstorms, lightning, glacier lake outburst floods, droughts and dangerous weather events. Among these disasters—earthquake is the most- scary and damaging. The effects of a disaster, whether natural or human induced, are often long lasting. The Gorkha earthquake of 25 April 2015 enormously affected human, socio-economic and other multiple sectors and left deep scars mainly in the economy, livelihood and infrastructure of the country.

Food for Life Nepal (FFLN) started with a small survey conducted in Budhanilkantha Higher Secondary School to find out the situation of hunger and malnutrition among the children in government schools.

We were surprised to observe a classroom where the children were sleeping and the teacher was engaged in reading a newspaper. Upon inquiry, we found that the children come to school hungry on empty stomachs and lacked concentration. Most of the children’s parents were labourers so they had a hard time fulfilling even the most basic needs of their children so the children almost never had a proper warm meal.

The sight of young children on empty stomachs kept bothering us. This made the core team start on a personal level by contributing to feed those 18 children of that particular school. Within three weeks, the number of children increased from 18 to 40. We later found out that the children were inviting their missing classmates to attend school because they would get free lunch at school.

Food for Life Nepal had just started its journey and then the mega-earthquake happened. Food for Life Nepal, being a food-relief organization, gathered volunteers from ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) all over Nepal and started distribution of free meals in the some of the earthquake affected regions in Sindhupalchowk, Bhaktapur and Kathmandu. Then the Indian blockade followed soon while the  nation was still recovering from the mega disaster. Still, the dedicated kitchen team continued cooking in firewood to keep the children in  the school away from hunger. So with a lot of challenges and hurdles along the way, Food for Life Nepal started its journey with just 18 children and now its currently serving more than 1700 children every school day with a vision that, "No child in Nepal shall be deprived of education because of hunger."

Mid Day Meals: As the bell rings, a cacophony of sounds fills the playground of our beneficiary schools. Children spill out of their respective classrooms, talking and laughing, to collect their lunch plates, bowls and spoons. The aroma of cooked meals laces the afternoon air as the excitement among the children are waiting in a queue. This is an everyday affair in many such schools where mid-day meal is provided by Food for Life Nepal (FFLN). This ‘Mid-Day Meal’ program of FFLN is based on the belief that one meal a day brings thousands of children to school.
