Greyhound Racing has ceased due to Covid19 lock-down, leaving trainers without the money that they usually receive from racing their dogs. We believe trainers are being paid a small fee per week per dog by the racing industry.
We have already began receiving disturbing calls and emails from trainers/owners asking us to help, to prevent any dogs being abandoned.
We believe that dogs may be left open to destruction if lock-down proceeds for more than a fortnight and trainers cannot afford to keep their dogs , as rescues will continue to close their doors due to the Covid19 , bearing in mind that they are already full to the brim. There will be nowhere for these dogs to go and it is likely trainers will have no desire to keep them if they run into financial trouble and cannot provide any care due to poor funding by the industry.
We have set up an appeal for companies to contact us about food donations and whilst we have been promised the possibility of a delivery of over 5 tons to the Birmingham area we have to consider that there is a total of 15,000 greyhounds in the British racing pool and that the closure of racing may proceed for a substantial amount of time.
All money received will be used to buy dog food. We have storage and distribution set up in several parts of the country already.
All receipts from dog food purchased using the money donated will be uploaded to our website to provide transparency.

We have never advocated an overnight ban of dog racing due to the fact that rescues would not be able to cope with the expulsion of 15,000 dogs as it would no doubt result in thousands of dogs being destroyed due to them having nowhere to go. Instead we have always supported a ban with a phase out of 4 or 5 years to allow dogs to be safely homed. For the same reasons we cannot allow dogs to be without food and must work mutually in this case to provide food if we want to keep dogs safe.
