Food Truck for Rasmi’s Falafel

In 2015 a group of Dufferin County folks decided to try to bring a Syrian family to Orangeville.   We raised the required funds to be approved by the government and in early 2016 we learned that a family of 5 would be arriving sometime in the near future.   In June we were thrilled to welcome Rasmi, Islam and their 3 children, then aged 11, 9 and 2.    Within 6 months Rasmi was working in a local restaurant and both parents were attending ESL classes daily.   Both Rasmi and Islam are great cooks and in the summer of 2017, they began selling their falafel, rice, hummus, baba ganoush, sweets and other delicious Syrian food at the local farmers' market.  Rasmi's Falafel was born! They have been very successful over the past three years and have quite a loyal following!  

They are now ready to take the next step to try and grow their business and they believe that a food truck will give them the ability to sell their food every day rather than just on the weekends.   With a food truck, they can also attend festivals and other community events both locally and further afield.  

While their market business has allowed them to be self sufficient and to have a reasonable lifestyle, it does not allow them to save enough to take this next big step.  With help from our community, they can realize their dream and at the same time supply us all with wonderful falafel and other Syrian goodies!

Rasmi and Islam have enhanced our lives so much -they are such an inspiration!  They have experienced more trauma than most of us can even imagine, yet are so warm and positive and resilient.  They would be so very grateful for the opportunity to realize their dream of a food truck.  Please consider supporting them.
