Food Justice Projects (FJP)

Tax deductible
Food justice has been an important local focus for many years.  Many committed efforts have made important inroads toward positive change as well as discovering obstacles to success.  Clearly, it’s a journey to create deep and sustainable change. We are asking you to invest in the Food Justice Projects (formally GreenStar Community Projects) in order to co-create some important structures, resources and informed planning and care to support another level of transformative change in our community - with focused attention to the survival and wellbeing of our Black and Brown communities.

The Food Justice Projects strategic plan will be co-developed with Black and Brown community members and assist them with the skills, resources & information needed to grow in all aspects of food justice from vision to seed to table & community - as young people, parents, neighbors, entrepreneurs and leaders.

Currently, we have one garden space on Esty Street.  CFCU bank generously offered a $1/month lease (ie. donation) for the project including the gift of water use for the gardens. We’re now in the process of developing two more sites, one at West Village Apartments and another at a downtown location.

Spring and Summer 2021 Plan:

FJP will host a series of "cooking shows". While teaching about the recipe, the chefs will also talk about healthy eating, cooking tips, growing & harvesting food, and food justice issues.

Live videos from our Esty Street garden and the West Village Apartments garden, experienced gardeners will demonstrate skills and share stories and tips for planting, tending, and harvesting.  We hope to involve young people and adults in all phases of gardening in pandemic-safe ways both in and out of the gardens.

We’re in the early stages of fundraising for the FJP. We are very excited to announce that an inspired and generous friend who is a past resident of Ithaca has promised between $5000-10,000 if we can match it with local donations.

Our goal is to raise $10,000 locally.
