Contra Viento y Marea- An Autonomous Caravan-Run Kitchen
A group of openly vocal caravaneros who resisted dispersal was forced to leave a warehouse near Benito Juarez, the sports complex where thousands of refugees were originally stationed. Now, a few caravaneros from that group have secured a lease on a kitchen/storefront! - CONTRA VIENTO Y MAREA With help from others they are serving three meals a day, 7 days a week for their community and will likely serve as a source of consistent food when then next Caravan arrives in Tijuana within the following weeks.

What We've Done
While the original purpose of this fundraiser was to support buying ingredients for us to supply meals in a moment of emergency, which we did successfully, we believe that this kitchen project is a solution to creating a longer lasting step toward food security as well as much needed autonomy for caravaneros. Plus what's better than folks being able to make comida hondureña, a food from home?! So far, from this fundraiser we had money left over to help Contra Viento y  Marea purchase a grill, stovetop, a deep fryer, propane tanks, tables, chairs and other kitchen appliances.

THAT'S WHERE YOU COME IN!
Now that the kitchen space is secured, the appliances are there and folks are working full time, the kitchen needs to have consistent supply of ingredients to be able to continue to cook 3 meals a day, 7 days a week for the next group of refugees to arrive in Tijuana. Also in the works is gaining access to tools with the intention of building a roof top garden with shade structure and areas to commune.

Background on Migrant Caravan
Thousands of Central American migrants have joined the Caravan toward the end of 2018, arriving to the US/MX border. Now, many refugees are now spread out across Tijuana in the streets and in various shelters.
