Mike's Colombia Service Immersion

Hey y'all,
I'm Mike, a senior at DePaul and avid adventurer. Throughout my college career, I've had several incredible experiences - from helping rebuild homes in D'Iberville, Mississippi to encountering bears in Ketchikan, Alaska. My next journey will be a 10 day service trip in Colombia through DePaul's Vincentians in Action.
This program was modelled after St. Vincent de Paul, who dedicated his life to serving the poor. Its intention is to "foster a life-long commitment to the dignity of each individual." This is accomplished through three Ways: The Way of Awareness and Appreciation, the Way of Dialogue, and the Way of Solidarity. The Way of Awareness and Appreciation is achieved through direct service and understanding. The Way of Dialogue is the simple, but powerful service of being there and recognizing "we are touched by the lives of the poor and the poor are touched by our lives." The Way of Solidarity encourages us to breakdown the "us" and "them" mentality by recognizing all people are part of a "we."
On this trip, I will be traveling with fifteen other students and two DePaul staff members in the beginning of December. We will be learning about the various facets of Colombian culture and serving those in need. After this service trip, I am planning to continue serving others throughout Central America. My goals on this trip include:
- further personal development of the Spanish language
- discovery of new cultures within Latin America
- return to places from the past: San Jose, Costa Rica and Casa de Los Angeles
- simply making friends with DePaul students and people throughout Latin America
There have been many influential people in my life. I hope to meet more of those people and be a positive influence to others. In order to reach my goals I need your support. My Colombia service immersion trip through DePaul will cost a total of $1265. These funds cover transportation, living expenses, and be donated to the community that we will be serving. Whatever extra I recieve will go towards my stay in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico at Casa de Los Angeles. Thank you for your encouragement and support!
