Justice for Norman

Donation protected

On 6/16 at about 5:30 pm, my horse, the most perfect trail horse you could have, was side swiped by a vehicle.  This person connected their mirror into Norman's side, scraping him and knocking his rider off.  This person then left the scene of the accident and then returned at a later time.  The rider on Norman sustained injuries that were not life threatening.  Norman is not so lucky.  He is currently at the best horse hospital in the state (Cornell University) fighting for his life.

It's not completely known what happened other than Norman was on the shoulder of the road, following the rules of the road.  He did not spook, stray into oncoming traffic, or acted out of sorts prior to the accident.  In New York State, horses and their riders have right of way over vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.  The reason for this is because they are unpredictable animals!  And yet, when an equestrian does everything right, our trust in humanity is crushed and this happens.

If Norman survives, he will require care and support for some time.  He is currently receiving blood transfusions and medication. He did not get tapped or merely scraped.  He has suffered internal injuries and is in a good amount of pain.  I am sure he doesn't understand what is happening or why, only that he hurts and is in a strange place. I am also seeking legal counsel to ensure that drivers are aware that if they injure an animal through negligence, they have to face the consequences of their actions.  I hate to think what could have happened if there was a cyclist or a pedestrian at the shoulder of the road when that car connected with them.

This horse is a farm favorite.  He has packed little children around without protect and he supports senior citizens through gentle rides.  Norman also is the best babysitter, keeping horses young and old calm and controlled through scary situations.  Not only would I be devastated, but the barn as a whole as he is loved by many, both human and equine.  The future is never certain but in times of crisis, it is our duty to honor memories to the best of our ability.

The funds raised will not only go towards a portion of his medical bills (for I foresee this getting to be much longer) but seeking an attorney on his behalf so that he receives due justice for the injuries he sustained.  Any leftover funds will be used to promote awareness for equines on the road and how important it is for drivers to yield to a large animal on the road.
