Olivia Benson underwent a successful cataract surgery 2 months ago. I didn’t think I would be able to do this for her, but with the funds we had raised so far along with a generous offer from a family member to put the remainder of the costs on their credit card for me to pay them back, she was able to get her surgery. I’ve lowered to goal to reflect the amount I have been able to cover myself through selling some of my photography equipment, but there is still a bit left to cover.
Olivia came into my life in late 2015 and she has changed it in ways I could never fully express. I needed her; she was a literal life-line. I have never opened up online about my mental health, but in order to know Olivia’s story you need to know some of mine. My name is Katie and I suffer from severe anxiety, depression and PTSD. My story is both unique and sadly all too relatable, but Olivia is such a happy chapter.
Olivia came into my life when I needed her most, quite literally my motivation to get out of bed at times and out into the world to take her on walks. For over a year this little rascal lifted my spirits and eased my worries.
Those of you that know her may know she lived with my sister for a bit this past year. I was diagnosed with, among a few other things, increased intracranial hypertension and a brain aneurysm, which left me with daily migraines and vision complications (the irony of this isn’t lost on me, one of us needs to remain sighted). My mental health took a pretty severe hit as well and my sister graciously watched her while I got my physical health under control. I’m happy to say that while I still have a long road ahead, my pain is managed and consequently my mental health is much improved and I have my baby back home with me where she belongs!
Olivia has brought so much joy to my life in the short time that I have had her. I want more than anything to give her that same joy and quality of life, but I simply do not have the money for this surgery. I have only just gone back to work, having been out of work for a year dealing with my own health issues. I have made it through the past year on my savings and help from my family, but their help cannot extend any further and my savings are drained. If you have anything that you could donate I would be forever grateful. If you cannot donate, please share this campaign. Please help me to help my girl, I need her and she needs her vision. ♥️
For those curious about the breakdown of funds:
The costs accumulated thus far for her emergency care, medications and specialist visits are $600.
Pre op testing (blood work, electroretinogram and ocular ultrasound) is done prior to surgery to ensure the retina is in-tact and the eye is a candidate for surgery. This is done under sedation, and will cost $1000.
Phacoemulsification Surgery, post op medications for the first two months and two months of specialist follow up visits are $4000.
***UDATED*** olivia had a very successful surgery and will NOT need to stay on her medication longer than 3 months, and our goal as been updated to reflect this ($400 saved)!! :)
**update 2** I lowered the goal to reflect what I was able to cover on my own by selling some of my photography equipment ❤️
