Flynn's fight against FIP

Our little Flynn was diagnosed with Feline Infectious Peritonitis on December 18th 2019. The disease is usually fatal and, in Flynn's case, caused high fever, lack of appetite, lethargy and a large build-up of fluids in the abdomen. If untreated, he could developpe more symptoms such as neurological and eyes issues, and ultimately death. We had exams done in addition to a complete bloodwork panel and radios taken, along with a consult from another veterinarian to confirm his diagnosis.

This GoFundMe will be used to gather funds to help pay for his treatments and vet bills.

Flynn is our little kitten born on July 9th 2019. He was at first a rescue from our local shelter that we fostered along with his 6 siblings and his mom when he was barely 2 weeks of age. We ended up adopting him after falling in love with his goofy and loving personality.

Flynn and his siblings did not have an easy start in life. At only 3 weeks old, they were diagnosed with Panleukopenia, a deadly disease caused by the feline parvovirus that strikes fast and hard, also with no known cure. Unfortunately, his brother Hercules and his sister Nala lost their fight against the virus... Against all odds, the rest of them miraculously got through it after 2 weeks of intensive day and night care from us.

Flynn is now 5 months old, vaccines up to date, microchipped, and was even scheduled to be neutered in January. While we thought the worse was behind us, life decided to strike again and infect him with the notorious feline infectious peritonitis (also known as FIP). Unfortunately, there is no official cure for the fatal disease and the prognostic is not good. However, we are not ready to give up on him.

After some research, we stumbled on a clinical trial published by Dr Niels C Pedersen along with a team of other veterinarians, physicists, and pathologists that studied GS-441524 for safe and effective treatment of cats with FIP. In this journal, 26 of the 31 subjects survived their infection with the disease after 12 weeks or more of treatment. This is a huge step in the right path considering there is usually no survivor.

We did not stop there.  We after found a group that Dr Pedersen is in touch with, along with dozens of other veterinarians managing it where information and resources are provided to guide people and cats all around the world to the right track in their fight. We learned there that there are 5 drugs currently available on the market that have shown success in treating FIP, one of them being Mutian. Others that were suggested were Shire, Blossom, Miner and Ajax, but are far less accessible for us.

Mutian is fortunately available in Canada via online orders and has been effective in curing the disease in 95% of reported cases, which is incredible. It uses GS and GC supplements, similar to those in the trial.  It is given via subcutaneous injections every day for 84 days. It is also available in capsules. We were, at first, more inclined to getting the injections as it is more certain that the dose will be administered, while capsules can be vomited, but with how wiggly and uncooperative Flynn can be with medical procedures, we ended up getting the capsules. Luckily for us, our veterinarian agreed to give us a crash course in giving the shots so we can safely do it if we were to switch to them.

This treatment is unfortunately not cheap. For his weight, the treatment would well over $4500 CAD for the 84 days (12 weeks), possibly more considering the dosage changes with the weight of the animal (if Flynn gains weight, he will need bigger doses). Today's tests for his diagnosis (exam, bloodwork, and radios) cost us about $450, and we will also need bloodwork done regularly to monitor his health and progress, which are around $170 every time. That brings the cost of everything pretty high.

This is where we need your help. Our hopes in saving Flynn will be very pricey. We will have to cut on a lot of things on our side too to afford it, and your support would be incredibly helpful if you have the means to. This is our cry for help, we love our little furball and would do anything for him.

Anything is welcome. Even if it seems small to you, any donation goes a long way on our end.

We will be providing all of the bills we receive along the way as proof your donations are going to help directly in paying Flynn's treatment and vet bills.

Thank you for your support,

Audrey (Seoxys) and David
