Documentary Filmmaker Hsuan-Yu Pan Needs Your Help to Document Immigrant's Story and Showcase Traditional Music in Tokyo This Fall

( Latest Update on Nov. 14: $2860 via GoFundMe & other methods. Thank you so much. )
I am working on my feature documentary "Hear, Eat, Home." It tells the story of five guys in New York City and their performing arts project. They are friends, artists and immigrants from Japan, the United States,
Lebanon and Syria. Their collaboration explores the idea of ‘home,’ through visual art, music and traditional foods.

Some great stories about these artists keep happening. I keep filming the stories before I get my grants. To truly represent my subjects, I would need to film them as they travel, which I can't afford because I don't have the immediate funds.

Mr. Kaoru Watanabe is a great Japanese traditional musician. He is one of my subjects in my documentary. He will lead a 10-day tour to Tokyo and personally guide the participants with an artistic and educational approach in order to explore Japanese traditional performing arts. The tour will happen from Nov. 27 to Dec.7 in 2017.

Kaoru’s story is a very important part in my documentary. He is a second-generation immigrant in the United States who is enthusiastic about and observant of Japanese tradition, masters the art form in Taiko drumming and Fue playing, and applies these to life.

The most effective way for me to document his experience is to join Kaoru's tour. In this way, I can observe him closely. The travel budget is $5,000 including $2,300 to pay for the tour and the rest of the fees, such as airfares, local public transportation, most of the meals and travel insurance. The deadline to enroll in the tour is Sept. 29.

I would be very grateful if you could help me to make it happen. I believe his unique and artistic experiences will be inspirational to artists, musicians, and immigrants.

Please help me to reach my goal and share my story.

Thank you so much.

Hsuan-Yu Pan
