My Father...

It's been a long journey together, my father and I.  I was always told how much I looked like my father, but we were hard-wired differently in some fundamental ways.  I never quite understood the silent stance on the drama of the day.  I am certain he wondered about all of those Madonna songs being played in my room growing up. 

As I got older, I came to realize how much more complex my dad was and like most rebellious kids, how similar we actually were to each other.  I also came to appreciate the gifts he has given me over the years whether it be working together on a pinewood derby car or simply climbing up to the top of the Sierra's to enjoy the magnificent view together.  I have always struggled on the perfect gift and how to show him my appreciation.  Well, I know what that gift is and I am asking for your help to make it happen.

This past holiday, my family and I received some of the toughest news a family can hear.  My father was battling a tumor in his brain.  There are no adequate words yet to describe that news.  I can tell you it is a very surreal conversation with doctors, family, friends, and myself.  It accompanies a fog thicker than I have ever experienced in San Francisco - my home.  And while I love San Francisco, it is probably the biggest liability I have being so far from my family during this time.  So, I am fundraising to see my father and family more this year. 

While the path forward is uncertain, I can certainly try and be more present during a tough time for my dad to show him what I believe he and I have always tried to show each other in our own way - that we love each other and we are here if you need me.

Your donation (however big or small) will help me fly home and be more present for my dad and family to help cook meals, drive to appointments, visit, and just be.  My goal is to be home every 6 weeks.
