The Flybrary

The idea of the Flybrary arose from how our thoughts are ours to emancipate, especially in a time where our actions can be severely limited. Our thoughts, dreams, and inner voice are autonomous and if we let them rise our creative ideas can solve the challenges we all face. By way of a fantastical library within a head I hope to encourage a thought provoking space were relevant books can guide us to new ideas and innovation.
Contemplation within a surreal setting and circumstance inspires new ways of seeing things, forging new neural pathways, expanding one's view from within to affect one's view without.
We can all soar to this paradigm
The Flybrary is a 20ft steel head with a flock of illuminated birds flying out the top.
Within the planar head is an immersive space, with an open ceiling filled with soft light, catwalks and a library of books.
The lighting comes from a neural-circuit inspired chandelier, with synapses lighting the space and intricate narrow catwalks that lead to reading nooks and little enclaves for you to sit and lose yourself in one of the many curated books.
The flock of book-like birds flying out of the head represent our thoughts and ideas soaring.
Books are not only filled with lasting ideas and inspiration, but the printed version is also a manifestation of the author's creative vision, something that is not easily transferred in digital media.
I want to build an unusual space to hold the written words of human invention, with the notion that our thoughts are free to soar even when our words and actions are not. I want the sculpture to encompass and inspire freedom of thought.
Opening a book and reading just a sentence or paragraph can spark an opinion or idea... I hope the Flybrary inspires people to do just that.
As a Burning Man Honoraria Grant recipient, the build of this enormous undertaking is partially funded, but there are still some costs that I need help covering.
I will be using professional trucking to move the Flybrary to Black Rock City, and transportation logistics are expensive. The funds in this campaign will help enable me to actually finish and deliver the piece to Burning Man.
With your contribution I will be able to cover the last part of the build, including the lighting components, bookshelves, catwalks as well as get this project on a flatbed semi on its way to Burning Man.
The Flybrary is an ambitious project and I am grateful for the opportunity to bring this experience to the world. Thank you so much for your support in realizing this vision!
