A little over a year ago I, Liesbeth, met a wonderful man, James, whom I love very deeply. Over the course of time we realised we wanted to spend our lives together but distance literally stands in our way. James lives in Illinois. I live in the Netherlands. Despite that, we found a way to spend some time together and started thinking of options so that we could be together permanently. Unfortunately things didn't go the way we had planned.
Because of my inability to help him out financially, due to my own health reasons, James started saving up by working 12 hours shifts for 7 days a week. Being together, truly together, became the defining goal of each and every day and gave us hope as we had something to work towards. However, things took a wrong turn.
Three months ago he was diagnosed with cellulitis, a bacterial infection in both of his legs involving the inner layers of the skin. It led to ulcerations and his legs went septic on New Year's Eve. It all started spiralling downward from there.
Being hospitalized meant that he was unable to work, which cost him his job.
Without income, he couldn’t keep up with his bills and he lost his apartment.
Right now he's left with nothing other than me worrying at the other end of the world and a roof over his head by the good grace of his friend. But in the near future that temporary housing solution won’t even be an option.
James is still in the early process of recovering but he has no place to actually recover. The deep wounds cover a large part of his lower legs, which means the healing process is extremely slow and may take up to a year. The physical pain that comes with it is beyond anyone's imagination.
If I can find a way to get him to my home he will be able to get much needed, professional health care and I can look after him, care for him and love him. His life so far has shown him very little kindness and I really, really want to change that for him, for the both of us. He is a truly amazing guy and has enriched my life on so many levels. I’ve never met anyone with so much love, empathy and desire to contribute something good to this world despite of all the misfortunes he has had to deal with.
With that said, actually bringing James here is going to be a hard, lengthy and expensive process, which I am unable to bear on my own.
It's also a very urgent matter since he's at the risk of being homeless very soon. In his current condition it would be disastrous and I just can't let that happen.
So I have decided to set aside my pride and not care about what others might think of my plea for help and to just start this fundraising. It's about the wellbeing of someone I love profoundly and I refuse to just idly stand by.
Any help, no matter how small, is going to make a huge difference. Please, if you can.

- Single Status Certificate: : $ 30 / 26 euro
- Legalization of both the birth certificate

- Dutch Immigration Service Application : $ 194 / 171 euro
- a plane ticket from St Louis to Amsterdam: $ 2000 / 1750 euro
- average health insurance for a year and additional medical costs
: $ 5500 / 5000 euro
Average total and goal: $ 8000 / 7000 euro
* Prices of plane tickets fluctuate so I can't exactly predict what the price will be. Also taking into account that he will need special seating.
I'm aware of the huge amount of money that is needed for all of this and the effort it will take to make it happen. But I am fighting for him, I am fighting for us and I will continue doing so until he gets better again in a safe and loving home.
I truly hope anyone of you reading this will fight with me to make sure we can give James the opportunity to get through this and to have a better life.

Omdat het voor mij onmogelijk is om financieel bij te dragen aan zijn komst hier, is James twaalf uur per dag gaan werken, zeven dagen in de week, iets wat hier niet eens mogelijk zou zijn. Maar op deze manier hadden we een doel om naar toe te werken.
Helaas ging het niet zoals we hadden gepland.
Drie maanden geleden kreeg hij op zijn onderbenen een ernstige ontsteking van de huid en onderliggende weefsels. Uiteindelijk leidde dat tot bloedvergiftiging op Oudejaarsavond. En toen viel alles uiteen.
De ziekenhuisopname kostte hem zijn baan en zijn inkomsten. En zonder inkomsten kon hij zijn rekeningen niet meer betalen en raakte zijn appartement kwijt.
Het enige wat hij op dit moment nog over heeft, ben ik, aan de andere kant van de wereld en een dak boven zijn hoofd bij de gratie van een vriend. Maar ook aan zijn huidige huisvesting komt snel een einde.
James zit nog in de beginfase van zijn genezingsproces maar hij heeft geen plaats om daadwerkelijk te genezen. De diepe wonden bedekken zijn onderbenen. Dat betekent dat genezing zeer langzaam gaat en met gemak een half jaar tot een jaar kan gaan duren. De pijn die daarmee gepaard gaat is slopend en niet te beschrijven. Ik wil hem zo graag hierheen laten komen zodat hij een liefdevol thuis heeft met toegang tot degelijke en professionele gezondheidszorg.
Zijn leven is een aaneenschakeling geweest van tegenslagen en het wordt tijd dat daar verandering in komt. Hij is een fantastische kerel en heeft mijn leven in meerdere opzichten verrijkt. Ik heb zelden in mijn leven iemand ontmoet die zo veel liefde bij zich draagt, zo zorgzaam en vol empathie is.
Het is echter een moeilijk en langdurig maar vooral kostbaar proces om James naar Nederland te laten komen. Een procedure die ik financieel niet in mijn eentje kan dragen.
Het heeft ook een hoge urgentie omdat de kans bestaat dat hij binnenkort dakloos is. En dat kan alleen maar een rampzalige uitkomst hebben in zijn huidige medische toestand.
Ik heb daarom besloten om mijn trots en angst over wat anderen hiervan gaan denken aan de kant te zetten en deze persoonlijke fondsenwerving op te zetten. Het gaat om het welzijn van iemand waar ik oprecht van hou en ik weiger om lijdzaam toe te kijken. Hulp, hoe klein dan ook, maakt een wereld van verschil. Dus alsjeblieft, als het kan.
