Flowers for Friendship

Yesterday’s terror-based massacres at Al Noor and Linwood Mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand by hateful white supremacists were an attack on the fundamental principles of freedom and democracy. As of the creation of this fundraiser, the media report that there have already been 49 innocent lives taken, plus at least an additional 48 people wounded.

There are even reports that the terrorists allegedly made reference to the January 2017 massacre at the Islamic Cultural Centre of Québec City.

This has, without a doubt, brought back a flood of horrible memories for our own Muslim neighbors throughout the province of Québec who remember the terror and grief when Ibrahima Barry, Mamadou Tanou Barry, Khaled Belkacemi, Aboubaker Thabti, Abdelkrim Hassan, and Azzedine Soufiane were murdered and another 19 community members were injured.

The purpose of this fundraiser is to show the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce community that we will not tolerate hatred and that we stand strong with *all* of our neighbors. Funds collected will be used to send a large floral arrangement to each of the three Muslim community centres and mosques located in NDG: the Muslim Community of Quebec (MCQ) on Chester Avenue, the Shane Haidery Islamic Association (SHIA) on Belgrade Avenue, and the Mosquée NDG located on St-Jacques Street.

The breakdown of the $400 fundraising goal is as follows:
- Floral arrangements, ideally the FTD Pastel Peace “best” basket ($100 x 3 = $300)
- Full-sized card with words of love and support ($2.95 x 3 = $8.85)
- Florist delivery charges ($8.95 x 3 = $26.85)
- Taxes ($16.76 x 3 = $50.28)
- An additional $14 to cover the fees charged by GoFundMe

Any funds collected beyond the $400 target will be used to send floral arrangements and cards to other mosques/community centres in the greater Montreal area.

A bit about me: GoFundMe has requested that I include some personal information in the campaign’s story. I am currently a law student in my final semester at McGill University and been a part of the NDG community since 2012. I am not personally affiliated with any of the three organizations, but I hope this campaign will be the start of a beautiful new friendship.
