Florence Relief: Krapf Family

Beschermde donatie
Hurricane Florence devastated more than one-third of homes in the town of New Bern, North Carolina.  One of those homes belonged to Kathy Krapf, a member of our RFPMatch team. Unfortunately, Kathy's home was flooded with 3-5 feet of water during the storm surges of Hurricane Florence, rendering the home inhabitable.

In addition to losing their home, all of the family's belongings were destroyed by the flood. Many of our colleagues and friends have expressed concern for Kathy and her family (including her small children), who are in the midst of a financial crisis due to the need for emergency housing and replacing basic items such as clothing and household items.

We've organized this GoFundMe to support Kathy, her husband, and her children financially as they attempt to rebuild their lives.

Kathy shared with us the story of their family's Florence nightmare.  Here it is, in her own words:

We are not strangers to hurricanes. Having always lived on the coast, we have weathered many. This time was different.

There was no doubt that Hurricane Florence was a formidable storm, not to be taken lightly. But we, like many, underestimated her viciousness when she was downgraded from a 4 to a 1 and showed promise of turning away from making direct impact.

We would be proven wrong. Flood waters moved in early and quickly, rapidly rising. We were prepared to leave — we each had our bags, the kids each had their favorite toy. But as the water moved inside our house, reality overwhelmed us. Our youngest daughter, sitting on the dining room table in a life jacket with her favorite stuffed dog in her arms and our cat in his cat carrier beside her while we tromped through the water (followed by our anxious dog) trying to move precious things to higher spots. Then, there was simply no more time.

We have a big truck, and the water was over the tires. This was it, suddenly and urgently. There was no way to save anything else but ourselves. As we pulled out of our driveway , we could only see the top of the mailbox above the water at the end of our driveway. And off we went.

We are thankful to be safe. People and life first. But as the storm moved away, the overwhelming reality sunk in. Over 3 feet of water throughout our house, over 5 feet in our garage. Most of our belongings flooded and ruined. Our house damaged beyond recognition. The storm is long gone but we are just beginning a long road to recovery.

The backyard, when the rain began at the very start of the storm.
The water line showing that nearly 5 feet of water surrounded (and entered) the home.
Evidence that rescue crews had stopped by to make sure the family had safely evacuated.
Kathy's children, resiliently helping with the clean-up after the storm.
The growing debris pile of belongings and pieces of the house ruined by the flooding.

We appreciate the concern for Kathy and her family. We are grateful for their safety. And we are hoping our community comes together to provide them with emergency funds to weather this crisis and rebuild their lives.

Thank you,
Paula Love and the RFPMatch team
