Flooded EM Intern

Donation protected
In the Emergency Medicine family, we take care of each other. Today, I am asking for help for a young colleague who suffered devastating damage to her home from Hurricane Harvey.

Imagine moving to a new town, in a new state, far from your family with an infant, born the week of the Match. Then imagine just two months into your career as a physician, you awaken to ankle deep water and have just a few minutes to grab your 5-month-old baby and your most precious belongings as you wade to safety while the water rises.

One of our new interns had this happen last week. She lost her rental house (landlord plans to destroy it due to severity of damage), she lost her car, she lost thousands of dollars of her belongings. We are all so thankful that she and her husband and baby are alive and well.

She has been staying in my house this week, and I suggested she make an Amazon Wish List to see if I could recruit some charitable friends and colleagues to help replace a few of the things she lost.

Please donate to all the causes helping the very neediest residents in Houston -- the Houston Food Bank, the mayor's relief fund, the Diaper Bank, the Houston SPCA. Yesterday, I helped some of the folks sheltering at NRG Stadium who will benefit from those charities, and they sure need the help. But also consider helping one of our own by making a purchase from her Amazon List. It would mean a lot to her, and to me.
