Article about the flooding.
My parents live in the area of northern Illinois that was hit hard by unexpected torrential rain and flooding last month. Since they do not live in a flood plain, flood insurance was not something they could afford and had ever needed for the first 25 years they lived in their house. The storms filled their basement with over four feet of water, ruining antique furniture, holiday decorations, stored memorabilia, their year-old furnance and air-conditioner, and their hot water heater.
At 61 my father recently went on disability as he is wheel-chair bound, has to use an oxygen concentrator and CPAP machine, and will undergo his second knee-replacement surgery next month. My mother is the sole wage-earner in the house and is putting in lots of overtime to help offset the large expense of replacing her furnace, AC unit, and water-heater. In addition, because my father couldn't really do anything in the basement, my mother spent several days clearing and cleaning the basement herself, including throwing out thousands of dollars worth of storage ruined by the flood waters. She had help here and there (I was out of state and unable to get back until recently to assist) but did most of the work by herself. At 60, her body and mind have been exhausted. And there's still more cleaning to be done.
Please help me help my parents.
