Braiden ("Braido") Maither is a 18 year old from Lahaina, Maui who is a competitive surfer and was recently diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis.
Ankylosing Spondylitis is a rare and genetic severe form of arthritis. Braiden started showing symptoms at the end of July 2014 and rapidly deteriorated to the point of needing a wheelchair. He lost 20 pounds and was very very sick. After consulting many doctors on Maui, Braiden was flown to the UCSF medical center in S.F. where he was finally diagnosed in September 2014.
While he will have Ankylosing Spondylitis for the rest of his life, with proper care and medical treatment and physical rehabilitation, Braiden is optimistic that he will regain full physcial function and be able to return to competitive surfing in 2015. At this point, however, Braiden is concentrating on gaining strength and walking without assistance. Its his goal to get back into the water and start surfing.
Unfortunately, his medical expenses are over $30,000 to date and his ongoing medical treatment is approximately $2,000 per month. This fundraiser is to help offset the significant medical expenses the family faces.
