Rabies is a problem that hurts all of us. It hurts our pets, our wildlife, and our people, and it is one of the most easily solved problems that we face today.
So why not solve it?
THE IMPACT: Rabies kills around 60,000 people a year, and half of those deaths are children under the age of 15. As rabies continues to spread, it threatens and destroys both human lives and endangered wildlife at an increasingly alarming rate.
Southeastern Africa and India are at the center of this growing epidemic and 99% of transmission in these areas occurs from domesticated dogs that are foundational to communities and easily treated.
THE SOLUTION IS SIMPLE: vaccinate the dogs in these areas, eliminate rabies everywhere.
Vaccinate 70% of dogs in rabies epicenters and the World Health Organization (WHO), World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and the Global Alliance for Rabies Control predict elimination of rabies by 2030.
THE MISSION: The only way to ensure the eradication of Rabies is by providing canine vaccinations and education in afflicted areas. Mission Rabies has been combating this disease in Africa and India since 2013 and is always desperate for qualified volunteers to carry out this work. Which is why THIS JUNE I am going to Malawi with a group of veterinarian students to dedicate our time, money, work, and experience to vaccinating thousands of dogs in an effort to cover at least 70% of vulnerable animals and eradicate rabies forever. We will be applying state of the art epidemiological techniques to track our progress.
