Fladia's question, "Why me?"
Marco's answer, "Because you can handle this."
From that moment on, our friend Fladia's life was about to change.
On August 31st, Fladia went to urgent care complaining of what she thought was a simple "Summer Cold." After a few days of rest she was back doing what she loved, running and training for her first marathon. On September 9th, she completed The Beantown marathon-her first! The following week, she wasn't feeling well, but figured it was from all of the marathon training, and she was just run down. However, the symptoms continued and after a weekend of severe headaches and nausea, Fladia decided to go to the emergency room on Monday September 17th to be checked out. That morning, while in the ER, doctors discovered two masses on her brain. By late afternoon, after a CT Scan, doctors also discovered that she had lung cancer. She has had her first biopsy and is scheduled to have one mass on her brain removed.
In our eyes Fladia is one of the happiest,most supportive, upbeat people we know. She is always helping, giving, or volunteering for something, and always with a smile on her beautiful face. If you have run a race on Cape Cod in the past few years, chances are you have encountered her at bib pick up or offering you a water and a cheer at a water stop. She can also be seen in the halls of The Barnstable Intermediate School as a volunteer or substituting. You may also find her dancing on stage at a Beth Walsh Dance recital.
She is the loving wife of Marco Homem, and the mother of their 13 year old daughter Julia.
This is a family that is always giving. Always doing for others. Now it is our turn to give back to them. We have set up this page to help offset the medical expenses that are surely coming and support the Homem/Wilbert family. There will be lost income, unexpected medical expenses, and other family needs that we can't even think of. If cancer has impacted your family or the family of someone you know, then you understand the widespread devastation it can have physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and financially. Every little bit helps.
