For six weeks from July 14th 2018 Dad and I will be participating in the Mongol Rally, working our way towards Mongolia from England, raising money for 'Cool Earth' and 'Black Dog Institute' along the way!
Starting at the ‘Good Wood Motor Circuit’ teams make their way by any means necessary east towards Mongolia, with a final finishing point currently located in Ulan-Ude Russia, approximately 10,000 miles from where you start.
The exact route taken is left up to each team. Each year you have teams go as far north as the arctic circle, before barrelling down through central Russia to the finish, some head as the crow flies through central Europe and Uzbekistan, while again other take the longer southern route the small eastern European countries, into Turkey, Iran and the rest of the ‘stan countries.
There are only 3 rules for the Mongol Rally.
The Adventurists themselves put it best:
Rule one: “Small and Shit” – “You can take any car, as long as it’s crap and with an engine of 1 litre or less. For motorbikes we've generously allowed 125cc, but would prefer it to be a scooter.”
Rule two: “On your own” – “We could tell you everything you need to know about all the countries, roads and borders between here and Russia to ensure you have a safe, uncomplicated journey. But if it's not dangerous and you aren't lost, you're not on an adventure. That means no on the road backup or support.”
Rule Three: Save the world “It only seems fair that if you’re having the mother of all adventures you should give a little back, so we ask teams on the Rally to raise £1000 for charity.”
Who are we raising money for?
Cool Earth is a UK-based international NGO that protects endangered rainforest in order to combat global warming, protect ecosystems and to provide employment for local people.
Half of the world’s rainforest has been destroyed in the last 40 years. And contrary to the headlines, rainforest continues to be lost at a faster rate than ever.
The Black Dog Institute
The Black Dog Institute is dedicated to understanding, preventing and treating mental illness. We are about creating a world where mental illness is treated with the same level of concern, immediacy and seriousness as physical illness; where scientists work to discover the causes of illness and new treatments, and where discoveries are immediately put into practice through health services, technology and community education.
We are also looking to raise £1000 to help cover expenses relate to the trip.
All donations over £2000 will be split equally between both charities.
