Aidan Matthew Murray is a blessing to the World. Aidan is a brilliant child with a sweet and tender loving heart. He loves to paint and snuggle with his blankey while watching Curious George. You can also find Aidan in his natural habitat (much like being in the wild) on his computer. Often times, this rare species of a genius, will snack on corn chips or dry cereal. And let us not forget his love of Bat Man and Spider Man...
Aidans' parents are Dawn and Matthew. The are very proud parents and it goes without saying they love Aidan deeply and with all their heart and soul...
This summer Aidan celebrated his Birthday on June 8th- he is very proud to now be 8 years old. On September 2nd he joyously began his first day of 3rd Grade. These are very exciting times for Aidan and he is thrilled to be in 3rd Grade!
However, Aidan fell ill in mid-september. His leg began to hurt and swelling set in. His mother Dawn took Aidan to the emergency room where they ran several tests.
---On September 19th Aidan was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma with tumors centered in his leg
It is nearly impossible to prepare oneself to the fact that their child has cancer. Parents and loved ones fall into a state of shock and dismay. Parents don’t know what to expect realizing that life as they know it has changed. The focus is brought down to “one day and/or one moment at a time.” The question becomes how to deal with daily life while being in the company with the unknown.
The realization that treatment is immediate leaves parents and loved ones feeling stressed and sad. What a family is told at the outset may not actually happen thus confusion and feeling lost may set in.
How will I cope? Who will do the laundry or cook and clean while I am at the hospital with my child? Who will keep up on the bills or even go grocery shopping?!!!
Then parents must face the financial side of this thing called cancer treatment. There will be further testing, the schedules of healthcare staff and equipment, overnight hospital stays and/or daily or weekly clinic visits.
There will be home care, specific diets, and adjunct case managers involved. Mentally and emotionally, cancer depletes both the patient and the parents. Cancer is extremely expensive, making it critical to address this, at the onset.
Again, there is great financial strain with cancer treatment. Many families are concerned about paying the bills for cancer diagnosis and treatment. Social workers, nurse navigators and patient advocates are often available at cancer centers and can provide information about the assistance available to patients. But who will organize and follow through with the details and/or the "business" end of Cancer when all the parents want to do is be with their child...
Advocates may be able to help patients secure transportation to and from appointments. Again information is provided but many times it is up to the parents to follow through with the details.
This is where moms and dads need their immediate family and friends to support them in seeing that paperwork is filled out and sent in to the correct institution that will further assist them and/or follow up on how things are going so adjunct care does not slip.
Parents may have only one insurance that carries a maximum to covering cancer. When there are limitations to and/or no coverage, such as not covering certain drugs, or extended hospital care this could affect overall care of the patient.
All of this lends the weight of an added burden to the moms and dads who are just trying to cope with the news that their Child has Cancer.
Asking for help can be a tough step to take, but friends and family often welcome the opportunity to chip in and provide support.
This is why we are starting an online fundraising campaign.
The cost of Aidan's care is already mounting and co-pays are rising. The limits of certain care is beginning to be an issue and what is not covered will cause the lack of delivery of proper care and treatment for Aidan.
Dawn and Matthew (Aidans Mom and Dad) must think about all of this and consider what next steps to take in order to ensure that "all" of Aidans needs are met and all of his care is covered---
All the while they must focus on Aidan and his total care program...
