After spending a few 2017 summer weeks (months) with family and friends in Wisconsin, Cliff Fitz raced down to Florida to batten down the hatches - literally, while everyone else was fleeing Hurricane Maria, he headed towards the storm. He's the guy that always has that $#%! grin on his face. And, even through a hurricane, the smile remained. After weathering the storm and being away from home for safety reasons, he returned back to a house that was fully in tact and saved from storm damage. But, apparently, a new storm was brewing.
Cliff started not feeling the greatest later in the fall. The doctor diagnosed him with strep throat, gave him antibiotics and sent him on his way. He wasn't getting better. Another round of antibiotics prescribed. He still wasn't better. Back in to see the doctor. This time they asked if he'd like an ambulance ride to the hospital. He needed to get there fast. A growth, thought to maybe be an abscess had grown and was compromising his airway, also bringing the threat of sepsis if it burst open. He got himself to the hospital and stayed for a night. The steroids He was put on helped immensely. A biopsy, taken that night, later came back with the big 'C' word. Cancer. Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.
Radiation has started, with more to possibly follow. He's now had a few chemo treatments. That course of treatment could last up to 4 months. He's still got that big smile and super positive attitude. It seems to be helping. He's started to lose weight, lose his sense of taste and lose his hair but, hopefully all that will return.
With this fundraiser, we're hoping to keep that big smile on his face. We hope to help with high co pays, day to day tasks and just help this rough patch feel a little smoother. He's far from family in Wisconsin but, has a strong Florida support system as well.
Send him a happy birthday wish too! His 62nd birthday is coming up on March 6th. Many recall Cliff's 30+ years of working for Miller Brewing Co., and the many memories he's made with countless friends and coworkers. For this accomplishment, we salute you for your service, Cliff.
