Life is not a sprint, but a marathon, so they say.

Everybody encounters stumbling blocks and other obstructions during the marathon of their lives. However, we often forget how many obstacles others have to deal with, already at the beginning of their run.

I believe you can only  get a feeling for it, if you experience it yourself. And that's exactly what I want to do. At least symbolically.

42,195 kilometers!

Anyone who knows me, would not necessarily associate me with running a marathon. With a relaxing Sunday walk, more likely. And yet, or maybe for that very reason, I'm going to do it.

I want to work hard, overcome obstacles and fight to send out a signal for the people who are only at the beginning of their own life marathon and are already unable to find their way, because of huge rocks and mountains that pile up in front of them.

I am talking about children from low-income families suffering from cancer in Bolivia.

Many of them live in rural areas where there is no medical care, so they need treatment (stationary) in the city and therefore are often separated from their families. None of these children has something like a health insurance that covers the expenses for the treatments. Sometimes the price of a single dose of chemotherapy exceeds the family's annual income, so self-financing a treatment is utopian. Without help, these children have no chance to ever reach the finish line of their marathon.

The "Asociación Esperanza de Vida" (Association Hope of Life) is a non-profit organization that supports children with cancer in Bolivia. For over two years now, my family and I have been in contact with them, trying to help as much as possible, with the support of many generous friends. We´ve already had some successes, for example were we able to buy a new AC, when the one in the intensive care unit broke down last year. Furthermore did we create a small emergency fund, for situations where medicine is urgently needed and money is scarce again. The organization operates only with help from donations, and as these do not come on a regular basis, survival is not always certain for this institution either.

Have a closer look into how the Asociación Esperanza de vida works and what they do:

- They provide a shelter for children and their families, who come from the countryside to the city for cancer treatment and have no means to bear the costs for accommodation and food. Children and parents can live, eat and are taken care of during their treatment, using the resources available to the organization.

- They take on expenditures for medical treatments in urgent cases.

- They take care of children whose parents have abandoned them during treatment.

- They provide a weekly self-made dinner for the children’s relatives that stay for several days/weeks in the hospital, taking care of their kids and just can`t leave.

- They organize strikes and demonstrations to draw attention to the grievances. Doing so, they were able to get a commitment from the city to establish a pediatric oncology ward in the local hospital. Furthermore they were able to get an ambulance to be able to cope with emergencies and provide fast transportation to the hospital.

- They fulfill wishes and dreams of the terminally sick children.

- They provide all sorts of individual support for the kids and their families. They organize birthdays, collection campaigns for winter clothes, all kinds of assistance in emergency situations, blood donation campaigns, fundraising campaigns, etc., etc., etc ...

As you can see, the children are already lacking the most basic things right from the beginning, even before they start their run. I have visited them several times and it touches me deeply in my heart, how lovingly the children are taken care of, how much support is given to the affected parents and how they all together, despite the most unfavorable circumstances, still find the strength and energy to fight like lions to reach their own finishing line or bring the loved ones to their finishing lines.

Let us get together to make sure these children get a real chance to run their life marathon, that they do not lack anything fundamental during their illness and that they can recover or even die under dignified circumstances.

I for one am on my way and I will be running my personal marathon on the 13th of October in Cologne. If you like, join me during my preparation and learn more about the organization your donation will benefit from. You can follow me on Instagram on "fitforlives_lily_goes_marathon". I will be sharing my marathon progress with you and also lots of information and many beautiful stories about the "Asociación Esperanza de Vida" with you.

With gratitude and love,
Lily

Zumindest symbolisch.

42,195 Kilometer!
