For well over a year I have been trying to raise awareness about a local building that needs help. We still have much to over come and the story about this building in very interesting.

The First United Brethren Church is 5, 870 sq. ft., 3-level structure that occupies the western half of Lots 21-24, Block 6, in the original Berthoud townsite platted in 1884.Berthoud itself is an agricultural market center and bedroom community situated along old Highway 287 between Loveland and Longmont in Larimer County, Colorado. Located in the center of the downtown commercial district on the northeast corner of Fourth Street and Mountain Avenue, the tall masonry church dominates the intersection and is distinguished by its square corner tower, lancet windows with tracery, and both Romanesque and Gothic Revival design elements.

Founded in 1874, the United Brethren congregation was the first religious organization to form in the Berthoud area. Ten years later, concurrent with the founding of the town of Berthoud in its present location, the group constructed their original edifice at Turner Avenue and Fourth Street. In 1904, the current building replaces the smaller, original church for a cost of approximately $10,000. Early membership rolls included a number of Berthoud’s prominent citizens, among them mayors and business owners, along with area farmers and town residents. The building served the Brethren Church through 1956, when it was acquired by the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel, founded by Aimee Semple McPherson. Ten years later the building became home to the small Hispanic Foursquare congregation which remains today. In recognition of its historic importance to the community, the First United Brethren Church was listed in the State Register of Historic Properties in 2001.

Various areas of deterioration and repairs show the structure has done extremely well for the last 113 years, but is in need of attention. This building is of great historic significance for the downtown historic district, and for the identity of the town of Berthoud. The church is past due for a top-to-bottom evaluation of conditions and the repairs required. The Church would benefit greatly from a Historic Structures Assessment (HSA), completed with the Colorado State Historic Fund grant money and oversight. A qualified architect, a specialized Engineer, and any additional specialists, such as an architectural conservator, will allow all areas of concern to be documented, with an outline of all repairs required, recommendations on how best to complete the repairs, and with an ordered list of repairs according to the most critical concerns, to the regular maintenance requirements. The HSA in turn assists with how best to phase construction, with possible additional grant assistance from the State Historic Fund outlined. The current condition of the structure shows it needs attention. If does not receive attention in the near future, there is the real possibility of irreparable damage with the loss of historic materials.

This is one of the only 2 church designed by Montezuma Fuller that are still standing at this time.

We know that the stained glass windows are in desperate need of repair but if we can first get this assessment done we will have a better idea of all the needs to repair this historic structure.

Thank you in advance for your help to this wonderful building.
All funds go start from gofundme to the church no middle person.
