Woodlawn Needs You: Magic City Mural Fest
Hey everyone, my name is Meghan, and I’m the Founder and Owner of Blank Space Bham (a small community arts business based out of Birmingham, Alabama!) For the past two years, I’ve had the privilege of working with my friend and community gatekeeper, Jason Avery, to develop a truly special placemaking project for the historic Birmingham neighborhood of Woodlawn.
Through the ups and downs of growth and decline, Woodlawn has remained as a community defined by strength. No one embodies that better than the women that call it home. This mural festival, led by women and featuring an all-female artist lineup, will speak to that strength, grace, and resiliency that has come to define this special place.
As a business, Blank Space Bham believes art is a catalyst for change. Beyond paint on a wall, we believe that the collective practice of creating a mural for (and in partnership with) a community offers a unique opportunity for people to take ownership over their spaces. In the way our environments help shape who we are as people, we recognize then that we, as citizens, should play an active role in helping to design and reclaim our built environments. It is our responsibility to dare to use our voices in efforts to transform the places we call home.
