Firefighter Kevin Van Dyke

Donation protected
I talked with Kevin Van Dyke today for a while and he is doing great! He wanted me to thank all of you for the thoughts and prayers and the donations and also the ones who came to visit him. He has gone through each comment and donation and read them all and said he is overwhelmed with all the support and love from hundreds of people he doesn't even know. He will be in the hospital for a while longer and is continuing to have some more procedures done. One of the big procedures is tomorrow and your prayers are appreciated for that as well. Thank all you guys for showing your support!

While operating at a tractor trailer fire Thursday night, a Paulding County Firefighter suffered an apparent heart attack and was resuscitated on the scene by other responding personnel.

At approximately 8:41pm several Paulding County units were dispatched to a truck fire located at 3807 Atlanta Highway in Hiram. 911 callers reported placards on the truck indicating it was carrying flammable liquids

Upon arrival, Engine 1 encountered a tractor-trailer heavy engulfed in flames. Several other fire units arrived within minutes to assist with fire suppression efforts.

At approximately 9:14pm, while operations were ongoing, Sergeant Kevin Van Dyke, the officer on Engine 1, suffered an apparent heart attack, fell unconscious and stopped breathing. Fire department personnel were unable to find a pulse and immediately initiated CPR. Within one minute an AED was used to successfully shock Sergeant Van Dyke’s heart into an organized rhythm.

Initially he was transported by Metro Ambulance to Paulding Hospital, where he was stabilized and later was transferred to Kennestone. He remains in the ICU at Kennestone in critical but stable condition.

Sergeant Van Dyke is 41 years old and is a 10-year veteran of Paulding County Fire & Rescue. He is assigned to Fire Station #1 located at 169 Thomas B. Murphy Drive in Dallas, Georgia.

The family has asked for prayers and that all inquiries be directed to the Department’s Public Affairs office.
