On the night of July 6th, a three-alarm fire broke out at Cerro Grande Meat Market in downtown Ottumwa. The fire burned most of the night before it was put out.
I live in one of the apartments just to the east (left side of the main photo) of Cerro Grande. I was fortunate that myself and my two cats made it out unharmed, but everything in my apartment suffered extensive smoke damage.
The landlord's insurance will cover fixing damage to the building, which will take at least two weeks or more, but will not cover any of my belongings or the costs of being displaced. I, unfortunately, do not have renters insurance. Almost all of my furniture, bedding, food, electronics and clothes will need to be replaced. I have also used up all of my paid time off from work in the last week and may need to take an unpaid leave.
Anything donated is very much appreciated and I am greatful to be safe.
