Fire & Dice Security Expenses

Our Story

We're Fire & Dice, a local game store in Los Angeles that was robbed not once, but twice in as many months. The first incident was 4/16/21, and exactly four weeks later on 5/12/21, we were once more broken into had a large sum of our merchandise stolen.

We never thought we'd be in a position where we would have to start a gofundme. It's not that we think we're above it or anything like that, but just to have go through this experience is so incredibly disheartening. As a game store, we pride ourselves on being a place people think of fondly; this isn't how we want to be seen.

But given the severity of both incidents, we really don't have a choice except to rely on the charity of our community. To be as transparent as possible, our insurance company is being an insurance company. They're requesting forms, documents and all other sorts of evidence (as they should be), while we sit and wait for their decision. And in that time, we were vulnerable to yet another unfortunate event that has led to even further loss.

Even before writing this, we had been investing in better security systems, including sliding scissor gates for our extensive store front. But these things take time, and we certainly did not suspect that we'd have to rush any decisions in such a short amount of time.

The long and short of it is that we are in a pinch. We need help to get through this rough patch, even if we hate to ask for it. We're so close to being able to open our doors and get back to gaming with everyone, but the nature of being robbed is that the setbacks compound themselves: we can't sell the things that were stolen, but we need to sell things in order to not leave ourselves an easy target.

We aren't particular about what charity you insist on. If you can donate anything to help replace our missing inventory, that is also welcome. But mainly, we are attempting to fund the installation of some kind of gated feature, as well as cover some of the costs of having to replace the glass door twice now.

Early estimates for a gate have it in the $10,000 range. We're not asking for all of that, of course, but just any kind of help is welcome. As for the doors, it has cost us a total of $1884 to replace it both times. Again, we understand that it is our responsibility to cover these costs to the best of our ability, and we certainly are doing that. But doing so also means it has become increasingly more difficult to afford just staying in business at all.

Again, we are already humbled and grateful by the outpouring of those in our community. We consider our patrons to be some of the most exceptional people, and we are proud to be your local game store. If you could help us keep the doors open by keep the riff raff out, though, that would put us over the moon.

Thanks for reading our story, and we hope to see you all again soon under better circumstances!
