Finishing My Magical Realism Romp Of A Novel

Donation protected
Hello Patron Of The Arts!

It’s Jane Peyton here and I have a new best friend – Cordelia Tanner, the world’s leading shoe designer, possessor of the rare extra sensory skill of psychometry (she can tell all sorts about a person just by holding onto one of their possessions), and inventor of an incredible digital shoe related technology called Footloose that inadvertently changes consumer behaviour and destroys one of the world’s major industries. This creates enemies on one side, but huge consumer support on the other.

Cordelia is amusing, great company, and mischievous. Unfortunately she only exists in my imagination as a character in a novel I am writing which is 80% completed.

I am fund-raising so I can take an unpaid sabbatical from work and finish the book as soon as possible. Everyone who donates gets something fabulous in exchange for their generosity including their name printed in the book acknowledgments!  See below for the different levels of giving and the incentive rewards.   They include signed copies of two of my existing books, masterclasses in beer, cider or wine knowledge,  and more.

If The Shoe Fits – A Magical Realism Romp

I’ve spent the past few months writing a novel called ‘If The Shoe Fits’ with Cordelia, and Rex her twin brother, as the central characters, and several other loveable individuals including beautiful Oscar Rivington, Cordelia’s ex-husband and best friend who runs London’s only existing Pleasure Gardens, and the ultra-charming Dr Elodie l’Archambeau, curator of the best adventures, who may have been Cordelia’s twin in a past life. ‘If The Shoe Fits’ is a visual magical realism romp which will make a gripping film. The story is set in present-day London and internationally.  See below for a synopsis.

Literary Agent Waiting To Read the Completed Manuscript

I have been in contact with a literary agent who represents some of the major names of contemporary literature. She has agreed to look at the manuscript when it is complete. That is not a guarantee she will represent me, but there is a 50-50% chance that she will. I also have other contacts in the publishing industry.

The novel is 80% finished and is at a crucial point where I need to concentrate all my time and headspace on it. I cannot do this and at the same time run my business, the School of Booze, so I need to take an unpaid sabbatical to complete the book. That’s why I have started this funding account to appeal to my mates, family, associates, and book lovers to become patrons of the arts and help to fund my essential monthly outgoings for three months so I can complete the book. I am offering reward incentives for giving so you will get something in exchange for your donation – please see below for details.

In case you do not know about my writing background, I am the author of nine published non-fiction books about architecture & design, and alcoholic drinks. My most recent publisher is the British Library. The Library’s publishing wing contacted me to commission two non-fiction books.  For non-fiction books it is not necessary to have a literary agent, but for fiction it is, hence me needing to finish the manuscript before I can find an agent.

What You’ll Get For Your Incentive Reward

In return for your amazing generosity in funding my sabbatical, there are incentives in eight levels of giving. Several of the incentives are related to my work in the alcoholic drinks sector because in addition to being a writer I am an educator, broadcaster, pub expert, public speaker, and founder of the School of Booze.

I am accredited through the Wine & Spirit Education Trust, and the Beer & Cider Academy which are Britain’s official education bodies for accredited learning. I was the UK’s first accredited Pommelier (cider sommelier) and Britain’s first Beer Sommelier of the Year. I am a former Drinks Educator of the Year. For my beer work I was awarded the title Outstanding Individual Achievement in Beer from the Beer & Cider Marketing Awards, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from Britain’s Parliamentary Beer Group.  More biographical details here  and a list of my awards and accolades (scroll to the bottom of the page).

My Gratitude Cup Runneth Over

I know this is a big ask as we all have so many requests for donations and charitable support. If you are able to donate, I hope you will know how deeply grateful I am for your kindness and I will pay it forward in all the ways I can.  I’ve had this novel story in my head for five years and I’m on the verge of finishing it and if I do, I’ll owe a great deal to you.  Thank you!
