FINDING for Attach conference

Last year I wrote and published a book called FINDING , the story of how my adopted son became my greatest spiritual teacher.  I wrote this story because it called me to share what I learned through the process of meeting our son Keydell, learning about the foster/adoption system, navigating his attachment issues that we knew nothing about before adopting him and then how I was able to put my mindfulness practices to good use to get through it all.  Essentially, Keydell and I trained our minds together, him through neuro-feedback and me through meditation and we were able to stay together as a family because of these practices.  The story is also an inspiring one of a boy who does not let his past defeat him and works hard to overcome his issues so he can thrive and find happiness.

In October the Attach organization is having their 29th annual conference in Colorado at the Denver Marriot tech center.  Attach staff have read my book and feel it is a great fit for their gift bags for attendees; particularly parent attendees.
Attach is a non-profit organization working on the vital issues of attachment, trauma and bonding since 1989.  The conference addresses growing developments and treatments around reactive attachment disorder which for those unfamiliar with this, looks very much like PTSD and stems from early traumas in children.  There will be highly qualified keynote speakers such as Dr. Pat Ogden, Dr. Peter Levine and Dr. Jaiya John along with several workshop sessions addressing parent child relationships, effects of trauma and various treatments; one called Mind, Body and Spirit: a Sensorimotor Approach to Healing Trauma that seems right up my alley and others presented by organizations such as Child Welfare.

Attendees include Parents & Caregivers

⋅ Educators

⋅ Child Welfare & Social Service Professionals and

⋅ Sensory Approaches & Occupational Therapists

My aim is to share FINDING with as many of these people as possible so that they may share it with the families they come in contact with that may benefit or feel inspired by it.  FINDING was published last November and has been very well recieved by Child and Family of Newport County and the general public.  Many have shared it with friends and family who have an adopted child or with friends who my want to hear an inspiring story and learn about attachement issues.

I feel that the more we know about eachother the more we can accept eachother and begin to understand and be at peace with one another.  We don't always know what someone is dealing with and when we see them behaving in a certain way that makes us uncomfortable, it brings up fears.  I hope to change that culture around attachement disorder so instead of fears, I inspire compassion for the children and families working with this issue.

My mindfulness practice was surely tested by Keydell yet, I grew tremendouly from the lessons he presented to me.  I was able to be with his upsets more calmly through my meditation practice and the way I shifted my perspective around my expectations for who he was or who I wanted him to be.  The book shares some of how I did that and I hope it helps other parents.  The aim is to keep our children at home.  If my story helps one family do that I will feel successful.

MY GOAL: I hope to raise enough money for 300 books and my air fare and hotel for three days in Colorado.  I plan to attend the lectures and workshops so I can come back and share what I have learned with my local community.  I do this through workshops, writing (blogging) and short videos.  At best I want to raise enough for the books and shipping.

BUDGET

Books - 300@ $ 8.00 (includes shipping) = $2400
Hotel, air fare, car or land travel - approx. $ 1100
Food - I can handle that one.

I am so grateful for any contribution you can make.  I am grateful also, that the Attach organization felt that FINDING was a good fit for their attendees.  Thank you in advance and you will see by watching Keydell's video that he is a happy, smart and thriving young man.  Have a wonderful day.
