My dear friend Sonia is going through something no parent should ever have to go through.
Her only son, Dakota, passed away 2 days ago. Dakota was a handsome young 22 year old, who in the last few years struggled deeply with additiction. No matter the battles Dakota was fighting, she was always there for him. The bond between the two was one of the most special bonds I've ever witnessed between a mother and her son.
Sonia has an incredible amount of outpouring support and love and prayers right now. Thank you! If you are someone who wants to help but you are not sure how to, please consider making a donation. The funds will be used for Dakota's funeral expenses, Sonia's travel expenses to Montreal, and help with monthly bills while Sonia and John are out of work. If there is any money left over, she would like to take a trip to Florida to spread some of his ashes.
In Sonia's own words, " Dakota has lost his battle with addiction. He is finally at peace and resting. His body was too tired and he wasn't able to fight any longer." He did fight. He wanted to live. He wanted to beat the addiction.
Addiction is a desease and it needs to be treated as one. We need to do more as a society. We owe it to our children and grandchildren. If you are struggling with addiction please know that you are not alone and that you are loved.
Dakota will be remembered for his infectious smile, his talent in the kitchen (in which he learned from his momma) and his witty humor. He was always trying to make you laugh.
