Fighting Hairy Cell Leukemia

I wish I never had to be put to the task of creating a gofundme for anyone I cared about. It can only mean someone is in dire need of assistance: that they are pleading for help for a cause in which they are unable to help themselves. Kristi and Lyniker Pastuch have been put in one of these dire situations.

It had been nearly five years since the couple had been to a primary care physician; a lack of health insurance to blame. When they finally obtained health insurance, they met with a doctor for a routine check up. However, it proved to not end at “routine”. Kristi’s white blood cell and platelet counts were critically low. Immediately, they were referred to the Montgomery Cancer Center, where a bone marrow biopsy ensued. Along with their close friends and family, Kristi and Lyniker waited in fear for the results. Unfortunately, our fears were answered. Kristi was diagnosed with Hairy Cell Leukemia at the age of 38. This form of leukemia is rare and is considered chronic, as in, incurable. On the bright side, it’s treatable with chemotherapy. Hairy Cell is a cancer of the bone marrow. In many cases, bone marrow transplants are required. 

To add to the emotional, physical, and financial toll this sweet couple will unquestionably struggle, the two are also undertaking fertility treatment. The threat of chronic cancer also comes with recurring treatments. Kristi’s eggs will not be usable when she undergoes chemo. They hope to freeze Kristi’s eggs before it’s too late. 

During chemotherapy, Kristi will be unable to work. With chronic cancer, the doctors visits, tests, and therapy will never end.

Remission is hopeful, we are hopeful. In this extreme hardship, let’s come together and support a family in need. I’m reaching out, pleading, to you.
